Ideal Candidate

Purpose
What animals suffer the most? We’re seeking to understand the ramifications different neuroscience theories have on the global burden of suffering between animal groups. IW is creating a dynamic model that displays different distributions of suffering as one toggles between competing neuroscience theories. This "suffering switchboard," as we call it, is itself theory-neutral, but allows the user to make their own assumptions. For example, they can decide whether and how much they want to weigh the importance of an animal’s total number of neurons. The database is focused on the number of animals and their total neurons simply because these metrics are the easiest to quantify among all the factors which might influence the capacity to suffer.
Proposal
We're seeking an accomplished researcher who feels confident that they can submit a proposal on what they plan to do, with milestones and deadlines framed in terms of objective results/deliverables. Candidates are encouraged to explain what these deliverables will consist of and roughly how they’ll achieve them.
The objectives of this project are to:
- Develop a Dynamic Database/Model
- (with the ability to update via crowd-sourced citations suggested by 3rd parties via Google Sheets)
- Provide a Regular Newsletter Report (i.e. report on new dynamic updates)
- Published Article in Scientific Journal Describing the Model and Database
Contractor’s Proposal Should Broadly Cover How They’ll Practically Balance Reporting With Publication
Overall, we need to balance the iterative development of the database, which is what is most important, with quality control (exemplified best by publication in a scientific journal). The accuracy of the database is what is intrinsically important, whereas publication is instrumentally important. To make sure we are on the same page, we want the Contractor to specify how they will balance these needs in their proposal. We’re relying on the Contractor to pitch us on the best way to do everything and then to give them the green light or modify what they suggest. This includes whether they think we’ll need to contract others to help them.
