Role: Coalition Director (CD)
Immunize Wisconsin / Wisconsin Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (WIAAP)
  • Reports to: Executive Director, Wisconsin Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (WIAAP)
  • Status: Independent Contractor/Consultant, temporary through December 2022; possible extension if grant activity permits
  • Roles supervised: Subcontractors as required by project activities

Role Description:
This is a highly visible position providing coordination of a grant from the state of Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS). The Coalition Director (CD) is responsible for capacity-building and leadership of Immunize Wisconsin, a new statewide immunization coalition (see later section for description of Immunize Wisconsin). The CD must be a persistent, articulate advocate for life-saving immunizations, collaborating in new and innovative ways to bring in a variety of partners with diverse agendas together in a limited amount of time. The CD must have a flexible schedule and creative approach, and a singular ability to address a breadth of audiences with diverse opinions on the topic of vaccines. Grant focus areas are: (1) Coalition Development, (2) Education and Events, (3) Mini-grant Management, (4) Equity, and (5) Evaluation and Sustainability.

The CD will be responsible for all operations of the coalition. The CD will establish policies, plan educational and other programs, oversee the coalition’s membership outreach, communicate with WIAAP leadership, coalition stakeholders, committees, grant program liaisons, interns and other related outside organizations through a lens of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Primary Duties (include, but are not limited to):
  • Managing all grant deliverables and budgets including but not limited to development of professional education, securing of Continuing Medical Education (CME) and other professional education credits, and use of online education platforms.
  • Developing education and outreach materials for stakeholders including newsletter articles, print materials, and digital assets.
  • Recruiting and managing a diverse group of statewide experts and organizations to serve as volunteers, presenters, and participants in the immunization coalition.
  • Securing funding for activities including development, writing, and responding to requests for proposals and other funding opportunities in partnership with other stakeholders.
  • Supervising consultants and subcontractors needed to accomplish goals and meet grant and contract objectives and deliverables.
  • Serving as a primary point of contact for the immunization program including representing Immunize Wisconsin and its members in a variety of settings such as with the Wisconsin Department of Health Services and Wisconsin Department of Public Health’s Immunization Program, coalition stakeholders, community organizations, funders, healthcare organizations, and advocacy groups.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: The successful candidate will have a background in grants management and a passion for coalition building. They will possess an understanding of the healthcare landscape and preventive primary care, a willingness to learn and provide outreach to diverse stakeholders, and experience with marketing and messaging campaigns as they pertain to community engagement.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in public health, child health, and/or health care grant administration.
  • Must have experience in grant writing and management including development and execution of proposals and scopes of work. Specific experience in government grants and contracts desired.
  • Skilled project managers with ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple priorities.
  • Ability to work with multiple stakeholders to develop consensus and develop new relationships to meet the mission of the organization.
  • Knowledge of continuing medical education, quality improvement, public health, immunizations, and/or physicians’ practices, as well as experience working with physicians or healthcare professionals desired.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and an ability to lift a minimum of 40 pounds.
  • Some travel may be required, including weekends (15%).

Compensation and Duration:
This role is an independent contractor paid monthly at a rate of $80,000 annually, or $3,333.33 per pay period. The Coalition Director is responsible for submitting monthly invoices and timesheets. This position is a temporary post through December 2022, with likely extension through April 2023. The position may be extended further depending upon success of the program and availability of funds, although this is not guaranteed at this time. As an independent contractor, this role is not eligible for benefits such as healthcare coverage or 403(b).

About the Interview Process:
The successful applicants will participate in two Zoom interviews of 60-90 minutes, along with a short skills assessment. We will also contact candidates’ references prior to making an offer. We hope to move quickly with this hiring process.

About Immunize Wisconsin:
Despite data that shows vaccines are a safe, easy, and cost-effective way to help prevent disease and keep children, adolescents, and adults healthy throughout the lifespan, immunization rates in Wisconsin leave room for improvement, especially in communities of color. These struggles have been laid bare during the COVID-19 pandemic; an unprecedented level of collaboration, education, and multi-channel communication has become urgently necessary as each stage of development, testing, approval, deployment, and delivery rolls out. Being able to convey the “power to protect” message swiftly and knowing how to address each audience’s concerns has never been so important.

To address these deficits and give rise to a robust, coordinated pro-vaccination infrastructure across the state, committed to bringing about actual change and a fair and thriving community, WIAAP will develop, implement, and maintain a statewide immunization coalition. This will increase opportunities and outcomes for the larger community, especially for families of color, drawing upon partnerships and networks to successfully unify and equitably fund qualified existing efforts and identify new ways to protect Wisconsin families, schools, and communities from vaccine-preventable diseases. This Wisconsin coalition will raise awareness and confidence and provide education across the state on the safety and importance of vaccination and keep all communities healthy.
