Irrigation & Soils Advisor Applied Research and Extension (Stanislaus) AP# 22-30

Purpose. The Irrigation and Soils Advisor will implement an innovative applied research and extension education program to improve irrigation competence and water use efficiency in orchard and vineyard cropping systems.
 
This position will address high-priority issues around water and sustainable food systems to enhance California’s agricultural economy and environment as well as the health and well-being of California communities.
 
The advisor will assist growers to build resilience in the face of greater weather and water availability variability. This is an exciting opportunity to provide support around the many diverse technological and regulatory needs emerging for growers in this region, including: (1) Development, integration and grower adoption of new irrigation scheduling and management technologies; (2) Improving irrigation and groundwater recharge practices in response to the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act, CV-Salts, etc.
 
Opportunities abound to build extension and research partnerships with statewide programs/initiatives, relevant commodity boards (e.g. Almond Board of California, Walnut Board, Pistachio Board etc.), irrigation districts, local farmers, and local industry.
 
The advisor joins a team of highly motivated UCCE colleagues who are passionate about their work and are dedicated to making a difference within their communities and throughout California. This position will work collaboratively with UCANR campus-based and county-based colleagues and external partners. The potential for collaborative projects within the UC ANR system is nearly limitless.

Counties of ResponsibilityThis position will be strategically located at the UC ANR Stanislaus office and provide support for San Joaquin and Merced Counties.
 
Reporting Relationship: The CE Advisor serves under the administrative guidance of the University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE) Stanislaus County Director, with input from cross-county Directors in San Joaquin and Merced Counties.

Qualifications and Skills Required

Required Qualifications

Education: A minimum of a Master’s degree in water science, soil science, pomology, agronomy, or closely related field is required at the time of appointment. 

Additional Requirements

·  Valid driver license.
·  Expectation to work onsite.
·  Be able to develop and integrate all aspects of crop production to promote sustainability, profitability, food safety, and environmental stewardship.

Desired Experience

·  Passion and desire to pursue a career in Cooperative Extension
·  Experience in building partnerships and with multidisciplinary teams
·  Demonstrated ability to effectively plan projects, manage teams and implement an applied research and outreach program, including setting measurable goals and objectives
·  Knowledge/experience in permanent crops (tree and vines)
