Program Overview

The Finance Development Program (FDP) looks for current seniors or recent graduates with an interest in finance, strategy, and healthcare. The rotation-based program offers an enriching two-year experience involving several areas of Michigan Medicine, with the goal of developing strong financial abilities, leadership acumen, and a deep knowledge of the business side of healthcare. Rotations and responsibilities are dynamic in nature, based on each individual’s interests and competencies, but all participants will encounter a diverse financial, analytical, and consultative rotation experience. In addition to the projects done on rotation, analysts also have the opportunity to continue investing in the program itself, including participating in peer mentorship, recruiting on campuses, and program planning.

Position Description

The FDP is aimed at recent college graduates interested in the healthcare industry that are searching for a challenging, yet rewarding, career in a dynamic environment. The goal of the program is to develop the skills and experiences needed by analysts to accelerate and advance their careers at Michigan Medicine.

Analysts in the FDP complete four 6-month rotational assignments within Michigan Medicine, or with Michigan Medicine strategic partners. During these rotations, analysts will complete a plethora of projects that build financial and professional skill sets, offer exposure to leadership, and develop an understanding of Michigan Medicine and the healthcare industry.

Projects will vary for each analyst in the FDP, based on the program member’s interests, skills, and development aspirations. Potential subject areas include finance, accounting, strategy, business planning, capital investment, cash forecasting, and many other forms of financial and strategic analysis.

FDP projects often require the collaboration of different functional teams, giving program members a unique perspective, and better understanding of how Michigan Medicine operates. Additionally, some projects allow for engagement with external stakeholders, including insurers, government entities, strategic partners, and pharmaceutical companies.

Examples of previous rotations include Central Finance, Department of Surgery, Department of Psychiatry, Department of Urology, Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, Basic Sciences, Mid-Michigan Health System, Revenue Cycle, Treasurer's Office, Clinical Design, Reimbursement, Medical School Finance, Enterprise Financial Reporting and Analysis, Clinical Financial Planning and Analysis, Financial Systems, and Real Estate.
