The Information Technology Management Unit within the Department of Ecology’s Water Resources (WR) program at our Headquarters Office in Lacey, WA. is currently looking to fill a permanent Spatial Database Coordinator (Application Developer - Journey) position. We are a cross-functional team of 10 professionals who are dedicated to providing advanced software applications to support the WRP’s scientists, engineers, inspectors, and policy makers. 

In this role, you will work in a supportive and professional environment with fantastic people who are passionate about the environment, understand the importance of work-life balance, and are focused on continual improvement and learning. You will contribute to how our group manages our spatial data and work with our geographic information systems. You will also work on diverse projects using the Microsoft development stack and agile methodologies to tackle some of today's most challenging and exciting IT systems.

Program Mission: The mission of the Water Resources Program is to support sustainable water resources management to meet the present & future water needs of people & the natural environment, in partnership with Washington's communities.

During Healthy Washington Roadmap to Recovery, employees are working a combination of in-office and/or telework based on position and business need. This position is eligible to telework up to 90% of the time. Ecology is following current state guidance regarding mask requirements, health screening questions before entry, and social distancing. Looking ahead, Ecology has recently updated the agency policies on telework and flexible and compressed work schedules.

Duties


What makes this role unique?
As a key member in the Water Resources Information Technology (WRIT) Unit, you will design, develop, maintain, and enhance applications for the Water Resources Program (WRP) focusing mainly on geographic information system technology. You will work with web maps and spatial databases, make our applications mobile, implement vitally important accessible features, and be part of a great team.
 
What you will do: 

  • Provide spatial database and web map development support in an agile work environment.
  • Independently gather end-user requirements and design complex computer systems to best meet business needs. 
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of current technologies ensuring the team has awareness and opportunity to implement best practices related to data management and application development. 
  • Work in close collaboration as a team to support all of our IT systems ensuring many opportunities for cross training. 
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
Experience for both required and desired qualifications can be gained through various combinations of formal professional employment, educational and volunteer experience. See below for how you may qualify.

Option 1: Four (4) years of experience using Esri Arc GIS technology (ArcGIS Desktop and Server, ArcGIS Online and ArcSDE products). Experience includes, but not limited to, analyzing, designing, implementing, maintaining and/or programming information systems
 
Option 2: Associates degree in Computer Science, GIS Applied Science or closely related field; OR completion of a two (2) year accredited vocational training program in GIS programming, IT or related program and two (2) years of experience using Esri Arc GIS technology (ArcGIS Desktop and Server, ArcGIS Online and ArcSDE products). Experience includes, but not limited to, analyzing, designing, implementing, maintaining and/or programming information systems
 
Option 3: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology (IT) or closely related field and one (1) year of experience using Esri Arc GIS technology (ArcGIS Desktop and Server, ArcGIS Online and ArcSDE products). Experience includes, but not limited to, analyzing, designing, implementing, maintaining and/or programming information systems
 
*Additional combinations of education or accredited vocational training, as listed above, can substitute for all but one (1) year of experience.

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Geography, GIS, or environmental science.
  • Knowledge of environmental and/or science based business areas.
  • Demonstrated initiative to improve skills through training or other learning opportunities.
