Two Phase Flow Experiment Research in Microgravity: Ground Based Design and Build, Imaging, Data Analysis & Acquisition Support for Microgravity Experiments -1

You must apply through the external link. This position is on-site. Please apply by November 11, 2022 for best consideration.

The objective of the Flow Boiling and Condensation Experiment is to develop an integrated two-phase flow boiling/condensation facility for the International Space Station (ISS) to serve as a primary platform for obtaining two-phase flow and heat transfer data in microgravity. The student will be supporting engineers with either some or a combination of design, breadboarding and testing as well as imaging, data analysis & data acquisition support of both the ground base system or the flight system. Some of the activities that the student may be involved in includes but is not limited to, programming in labview, C/C++ and/or Linux; optical diagnostics analysis on the high frame rate camera subsystems, lensing subsystem and illumination subsystem; supporting the avionics data acquisition system with data collection; analyzing, cataloging and/or consolidating ground based data from testing and mission sims. A follow experiment on to the FBCE flight system is in the works so the student might have the opportunity to help with the design and fabrication of a new ground base system too.

Technical Skills: The student should be familiar with working in the lab environment, taking data/measurements and extrapolating results and working with most lab equipment. Student should have experience with data acquisition systems and software such as Matlab or computer skills such as Python. CAD skills will be helpful with the designing of the breadboard ground base system. Student should have basic knowledge with MS Office products. The student should have good communication skills to convey and present on the work they have accomplished. The area of expertise is Physical sciences and biomedical technologies in space
