Communications and Outreach for Data Science Efforts at NASA

The Agency is involved in many major efforts related data science.

There is an urgent need to communicate these efforts and the results of these efforts with the NASA community, NASA partners, and the public. The selected intern will be heavily involved in all these areas.

Examples of the kind of work that needs to be done:

1. Maintain the NASA AIML (Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning) Website
2. Help plan and execute presentations about data science
3. Document on the website or elsewhere all the data science resources available to NASA workers
4. Help with an effort to collect data about projects, tools, and people involved in data science at NASA
5. Help with coordinating machine learning forums planned for the summer
6. Develop ways to tell the story of data science at GRC using blog posts, newsletters, videos, interviews,...
7. Work with Agency efforts on creating community of action spaces for data science


The intern will have opportunities to propose new ideas to help with communications and outreach efforts.

This internship is cross-cutting as data science it is a tool used across all Mission Directorates and Core Competencies at NASA Glenn: Aircraft Propulsion, Communications Technology and Development, Space Propulsion and Cryogenic Fluids Management, Power, Energy, Storage, and Conversion, Materials and Structures for Extreme Environments, Physical Sciences and Biomedical Technologies.

Basic understanding of data science, data management, artificial intelligence, and machine learning is desirable but not required. Ability to use collaboration tools like Microsoft Teams and Office 365 is also helpful, but not required.

An understanding of general principles of science, research, and engineering is needed to effectively communicate with researchers working on data science. Some skills with graphics for making presentations, graphics, is a definite plus.

Excellent writing skills are needed. Possibly opportunities to do some speaking so speaking skills are needed. Ability to work independently, be organized, and respond rapidly to requests.

Eligibility requirements:

  • U.S. Citizen
  • Cumulative 3.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale)
  • Full-time students (high school through graduate)
  • Enrollment in a degree granting institution
  • 16 years of age at the time of application (no exceptions)
