Huston Urban Green Educator

The Student Conservation Association (SCA), Americas #1 conservation service organization seeks qualified applicants to lead, educate, and inspire students for the programs.
Texas Community Programs office is currently looking to hire a bilingual Urban Green Educator to support SCAs Urban Tree House Program. In Houston, Urban Initiatives engage underserved youth in hands-on projects in service to nature, transforming their local neighborhoods and creating new possibilities for their futures. Geared to predominantly low-to-moderate income youth of color, the program operates in Houston neighborhoods that have historically lacked adequate and equitable access to nature.

Programs Dates: 12/12/2022 - 6/2/2023
Location: Houston, TX

Position Details:
SCA Houston Urban Tree House (UTH) provides free and memorable environmental education programs for Houston urban youth (K-12). It gives Houston youth the opportunity to have fun experiences in nature, become aware of their relationship with the environment, and participate in hands-on conservation projects.

UTH programs take place during school hours, in the classroom and outside in parks/greenspaces near the school. The program supports the belief that increased community awareness and appreciation of the local ecosystem will create a stronger, cleaner, healthier, and more beautiful world. When students are given the knowledge, they need to make informed decisions and act in conscientious ways, they can make lasting positive impacts on their local environment and become lifetime stewards of their communities.

Urban Green Educator will:
  • Facilitate outdoor environmental education, climate resilience and culturally relevant activities and games with hundreds of urban youth K-12.
  • Work with bridging learning gaps for ESL students and At-risk youth.
  • Develop curriculum to integrate into program.
  • Provide outreach to the community about programs offered at the Urban Tree House.
  • Keep an accurate record of the numbers of youth served and programs facilitated.
  • Assist in leading conservation service projects like tree maintenance, native gardening, and invasive plant removal with groups of youth.
  • Work as a team with SCA staff.
  • Represent SCA at community events.
  • Assist with facilitating Environmental Education field trips with members of SCA's High School conservation crews.
Salary and Position Dates:
  • $800 weekly salary
  • Dates: 24 week position with the possibility for extension
  • Anticipated start date is 12/12/2022
  • Position is based in Houston, TX and no housing is offered.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Bilingual, Spanish speaking/native
  • 21 yrs. or older with access to transportation to get to the schools
  • Experience creating curriculum and working in classroom settings
  • Outdoor skills; experience working with diverse groups of youth; ability to maintain safe, productive and enjoyable work environment; strong interest in working with and mentoring youth.
  • Plant identification skills, knowledge of local ecology, or knowledge of the environmental justice is a big plus

Conditions of Employment:
Beginning on 1/18/22, all new SCA program participants are required to provide proof of up-to-date vaccination against COVID-19. Per CDC guidance, up-to-date vaccination now includes all recommended COVID-19 vaccines, including any booster dose(s) when indicated. For example, if someone has completed the primary series but is not yet indicated for a booster shot, they are considered up to date. Once a person is indicated for a booster (6 months after Pfizer or Moderna primary series, 2 months after J&J primary series), full and up-to-date vaccination includes the completed booster shot.
