6PPD Toxicologist (Toxicologist 2)

Keeping Washington Clean and Evergreen

The Hazardous Waste Toxics Reduction program within the Department of Ecology is looking to fill a 6PPD Toxicologist (Toxicologist 2) position. 

This position can be located at one of the following locations:
Headquarters Office in Lacey, WA.
Northwest Region Office (NWRO) in Shoreline, WA.
Central Region Office (CRO) in Union Gap, WA.
Eastern Region Office (ERO) in Spokane, WA. 

Upon hire, you must live within a commutable distance from the duty station.

Please Note: The salary posted above does not include the additional 5% premium pay that this position will receive due to this position's location in King County. 
 
Want to be part of a team that addresses chemicals of concern? Hazardous chemicals seem to be everywhere nowadays. This is a unique opportunity to be part of an innovative team of experts addressing chemicals of emerging concern. This position serves as the toxicology technical expert responsible for assisting with the development of the alternatives assessment for the chemical of emerging concern, 6PPD. Alternatives Assessments are used to research potential alternatives to replace the use of harmful chemicals.

The mission of the HWTR Program is to protect Washington’s residents and environment by reducing the use of toxic chemicals, safely managing dangerous waste, preventing new contaminated sites, and cleaning up contamination. The HWTR vision is to be national leaders in minimizing and eliminating the impacts of toxic chemicals and hazardous waste.    

During Healthy Washington Roadmap to Recovery, employees are working a combination of in-office and/or telework based on position and business need. This position is not currently required to work in the office on a regular basis. Ecology is following current state guidance regarding mask requirements, health screening questions before entry, and social distancing. Looking ahead, Ecology has recently updated the agency policies on telework and flexible and compressed work schedules. Duties

What makes this role unique? 
This position serves as the toxicology technical expert responsible for assisting with the development of the alternatives assessment for the chemical of emerging concern, 6PPD. Alternatives Assessments are used to research potential alternatives to replace the use of harmful chemicals. 
 
What you will do: 
  • Conduct objective, science-based research on toxic chemicals and metals of concern impacting human health and the environment using the best science available. 
  • Research, interpret data and share toxicological information about potentially hazardous substances in the environment. 
  • Review toxicological studies and interpret toxicology data to support applicable state laws, including Safer Products for Washington, and other consumer product laws.  
  • Compare studies and summarize results for review by the senior toxicologist.
  • Review exposure studies to characterize exposure pathways for review by senior toxicologist.
  • Identify peer-reviewed studies related to chemicals identified for alternative assessment of 6PPD.
  • Review hazard assessments and toxicity screens.



Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
Experience for both required and desired qualifications can be gained through various combinations of formal professional employment, educational and volunteer experience. See below for how you may qualify.
Option 1:
A Master's of Science degree in toxicology or in a health or ecological related science with a major emphasis in toxicology and three years of experience as a toxicologist.
OR
Option 2:

A Ph.D. degree in toxicology or in a health or ecological related science with a major emphasis in toxicology and one year of toxicology experience.


Desired Qualifications:
We highly encourage you to apply even if you do not have some (or all) of the desired experience below.

  • Experience with toxicology tools, models, and chemical database systems (e.g. EPA ToxCast). 
  • Experience in one or more of the following disciplines: human health toxicology, aquatic toxicology, ecological toxicology, hazard assessments, alternatives assessments or green chemistry.
  • Experience in communicating complex technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences.
