College Counseling: Associate or Co-Director (title based on experience)

Catlin Gabel School in Portland, OR seeks an experienced college counseling professional to join our College Counseling team in 2023. 

Title: College Counseling: Associate or Codirector (Experience Dependent)

Salary: $75,000-$80,000/year

Position Summary:
·       Guided by the school’s values, our college counseling process encourages students to take ownership of the college search with support from their family and college counselors.
·        Our college counselors assist students at each stage and educate the school community on colleges, application standards, trends, and alternative post-graduate opportunities, work with families as they consider college costs and funding sources, and build relationships with colleges on behalf of the school.
·       We celebrate the diversity of our students and their multifaceted goals.
·       The college counselor will participate in and help shape all activities required to advance a forward-thinking college counseling program that is grounded in the school's educational mission and progressive philosophy; provide individual guidance to 35-40 students in each graduating class as well as group programming in grades 9-12;​ and maintain a dialogue with college admission officers at a wide array of colleges.
·       The successful applicant will communicate exceptionally, balance competing tasks graciously and engage openly in the Catlin Gabel community. Above all, they will listen and connect skillfully and compassionately with adolescents and their families.
·       They will have an understanding of the value of a progressive educational philosophy and will display a strong connection with and appreciation for teenagers and their families.

Job Responsibilities:
·       Assist and cooperate with the Director of College Counseling to design and implement a program that offers individual guidance, group meetings, evening events, and virtual programming to guide students as they search for, apply to, and enroll in college, make gap year plans, or pursue employment and other opportunities outside higher education.
·       Hold individual, family and grade level meetings with eleventh and twelfth graders to assist them in researching colleges, completing applications and making enrollment decisions.
·       Offer regular group meetings that cover college counseling topics including building an appropriate list of colleges, completing applications, considering college costs, essay writing, standardized testing, and other relevant topics.
·       Coordinate family programming that keeps parents and guardians appropriately informed of college counseling topics. Communicate regularly with families as appropriate throughout high school to educate and support them on the college admission process.
·       Write a School Report letter in support of each student’s application.
·       Stay informed about and connected with colleges and universities, including their application and admission processes and policies. Supervise the coordination of college admission representative visits.
·       Stay informed on standardized testing policies and procedures, and advise the school community on this topic.
·       Represent the school in the larger higher education community including attending workshops, conferences and forums regarding college admission, and visiting college campuses. National and international travel is regularly required.
·       Advise school administrators and take part in curriculum conversations as they relate to college admission.
 
Qualifications:
·       Bachelor’s Degree
·       At least two years of college admission experience, either as a secondary school college counselor or in a selective college admission office.
·       At least five years working with adolescents.
