Digital Editor

Haymarket Media, Inc. is seeking a Digital Editor to join the McKnight’s team. This position is located in our Northbook, IL office; however, we offer flexible working options.

Job Overview:
The McKnight’s titles are the leading business-to-business media brands in their respective coverage areas of senior living, skilled nursing and home care. The ideal candidate will have proficiency in writing, especially news writing, as well as in editing and project management; comfort and experience with a variety of social media tools and technology platforms; and an ability to quickly grasp the nuances of industry-related issues.
This person must be able to craft editorial content that is concise, clear, interesting and, above all, accurate. Other required attributes include curiosity; a devotion to meeting deadlines; excellent grammar, spelling and punctuation skills; the ability to work independently and with multiple teams; a willingness to constantly improve; and a good sense of humor.
The digital editor will work across McKnight’s multiple platforms, primarily on the daily digital side, contributing to the brand's daily news coverage, monthly print editions, audio and video content, and monthly events including roundtables and award programs. On any given day, you’ll be responsible for quickly reporting and writing two to three short pieces for our daily publication cycle, interviewing key figures for our podcasts, reporting an in-depth feature and helping to curate our live events. You’ll work with our marketing, social media and production staffs to ensure your work is reaching the broadest possible audience with content that resonates with our users.

Responsibilities:
  • Share all articles via all social media accounts every business day — Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram — following best practices and using handles and hashtags to maximize the posts’ effects. Also, interact with friends/followers who share or comment on posts.
  • Make live in WordPress relevant Health Day news items every day — making a few very minor edits for style, checking excerpts (teaser text), adding tags and changing categories as needed so that the articles appear in the proper part of the website.
  • Check sister websites at Haymarket for articles of relevance to our readers, and then work with their staffs to secure that content for our sites. (For instance, checking Neurology Advisor for articles about Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, etc.).
  • Check digital editions of print magazines — 16 issues per year between LTCN and MSL — and work to see that any needed corrections are made. Post digital editions when finalized.
  • Post print issue content online — up to 16 issues per year.
  • Moderate Product Theaters and, as needed, other online events. Includes helping to write and/or proofread related materials such as content for registration pages and e-blasts.
  • Manage the procurement, editing and posting of guest/marketplace columns, and related correspondence with Assist with the WordPress and Eloqua editorial parts of the newsletter process, as needed.
  • Post Newsmaker podcasts on the websites.
  • Write, edit and/or proofread editorial content as requested.
  • Help with website-related tasks as requested.
  • Assist with print production of the magazines (16 issues per year) as well as other print production, as requested.
  • Potentially conduct editorial podcasts.
  • Managing editorial projects, including some print and digital publications and editorial portion of events, as assigned.
  • Writing, editing and proofreading content as assigned.
  • Moderating online events such as webinars, and assisting with related materials.
  • Moderate virtual and in-person events and host editorial and sponsored podcasts
  • Performing additional duties as requested.

Skills and Requirements:
  • Proficiency in news and feature writing, editing, grammar, spelling and punctuation.
  • Familiarity with AP Style and willingness to learn McKnight’s exceptions to it.
  • Experience in project management.
  • Ability to follow directions.
  • Knowledge of best practices for social media and search engine optimization, or willingness to learn.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a group and with multiple teams.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks concurrently.
  • Comfortable working with technology and learning to work with new technology.
  • Previous use of WordPress, Google Workspace, Microsoft Word Office Suite, Adobe InCopy and Eloqua, or willingness to learn.
  • Knowledge of skilled nursing, senior living and home care, including differences and similarities, or a willingness to learn.
  • 3 to 5 years reporting and editing experience
  • Knowledge of digital publishing, including analytics, SEO, Yoast and Chartbeat.
  • Ability to generate original content ideas across a range of channels using analytics, social media listening tools and editorial spidey-sense.
  • Capacity to thrive under pressure and juggle multiple projects simultaneously
  • Curiosity and a deep distaste for being second to a story.
  • Relentless communication skills.

What We Offer:
  • A competitive compensation package
  • Paid annual vacation, holiday and sick time off
  • Comprehensive health plans including medical, dental and vision
  • Competitive 401(k) investment options and generous company matching program
  • Life insurance
