Officer, Communications, Shot@Life

Position Overview

Shot@Life is a grassroots advocacy campaign of the United Nations [UN] Foundation that works to give more of the world’s people, especially children, access to lifesaving vaccines. Shot@Life mobilizes public and private resources in support of the global immunization program work of UN partners. The campaign’s supporters and U.S.-based grassroots advocates strive to decrease vaccine-preventable deaths and give every child a shot at life no matter where they live.
Shot@Life seeks a Communications Officer to execute the campaign’s communications plan and ensure all external campaign products are top-notch and adhere to brand standards. The Officer reports to the Campaign Director and directly supervises the Communications Associate and seasonal interns. The Officer closely collaborates with and advises colleagues across all Shot@Life workstreams and coordinates with communications professionals on the UN Foundation’s global health and public affairs teams. 
This position is excellent for someone who is passionate about global health and has a keen understanding of how to develop and execute comprehensive communications strategies to educate, engage, and mobilize target audiences. The right candidate will demonstrate professional maturity and judgment with people and projects; be extremely detail-oriented and organized; a stickler for accurate, clear, concise, and consistent writing and communications products; skilled at prioritization and finding ways to work most efficiently and effectively toward the campaign’s overall strategic goals.

This position is based out of the UN Foundation’s Washington, D.C. office. (Hybrid schedule)

Essential Functions
  • With the oversight of the Campaign Director, create a comprehensive, multifaceted plan to achieve the Shot@Life campaign’s strategic communications goals
  • Manage and implement the Shot@Life campaign’s comprehensive communications plan. 
  • Manage the campaign’s communications staff members (an associate and intern), specific communications projects, and editorial calendar
  • Work with members of all campaign workstreams – i.e., leadership, direct and grassroots advocacy, corporate and individual fundraising, etc. – to provide communications expertise and support necessary to engage the campaign’s various audiences
  • Serve as ultimate keeper and protector of the Shot@Life brand across all campaign workstreams
  • Ensure all of Shot@Life’s external products are top-notch – i.e., error-free, succinctly and compellingly written, visually clear and compelling, and at a professional level in all ways – and consistently adhere to brand standards and messaging (on and offline) before external publication
  • Manage and prioritize requests made of the communications unit; find ways to work most efficiently and effectively; determine the communications projects and products that will best help the campaign achieve its end goals.
  • Ensure the campaign’s crisis communications plan is always at-the-ready, especially in the social media realm.
  • Write and/or manage the drafting and overall production of general supporter written materials (emails, fundraising appeals, blog/news posts, social media and website copy, media publications, presentation scripts, talking points) and visual content needed for website, social media, advocacy activities, corporate partner deliverables (graphics/infographics, photos, and videos, event materials, swag, presentations, etc.).
  • Manage the campaign’s digital fundraising program for general supporters– draft email and social media appeal copy, create online landing pages and donation forms, track and apply insight from digital marketing analytics to reach fundraising goals
  • Contribute to the redesign of Shot@Life’s website (shotatlife.org), working alongside an agency to modernize its architecture, content strategy, design, and functionality to grow the campaign’s total number of engaged supporters
  • Develop/write thought leadership pieces (articles, op-eds, letters-to-the-editor, presentations) for Shot@Life campaign leaders to raise the campaign’s profile and, thereby, grow its list of supporters
  • Work with UN Foundation public affairs colleagues to secure placements in key media outlets
  • Find opportunities for Shot@Life campaign leaders to speak/publish in front of new audiences via podcasts or org partner industry newsletters
  • Manage communications project budgets and relationships with external consultants, including graphic designers, negotiating terms and contracts when needed
  • Manage relationships with campaign ambassadors and digital influencers, including the implementation of a new digital influencer strategy to grow campaign supporter base
  • Coordinate communications activities with global health partner organizations around key global health and immunization-related moments of the year
  • Organize and implement trips to the field, once every 1-2 years, paired with a photographer and/or videographer to gather storytelling assets needed by the campaign
  • Writing skill assessment is part of the interview process
  • Other duties as assigned

Selection Criteria

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field required – English, journalism, or communications
  • 5-7 years of professional communications experience, preferably for an international or global health nonprofit
  • Superior written communications skills
  • Demonstrated track record of writing and producing digital and print content for a range of target audiences
  • Experience translating dense, technical source material into compelling content that is accessible to a general audience
  • Diversified portfolio of writing samples and storytelling content required
  • Strong preference for someone with management experience, excellent professional judgment, and maturity
  • Strong project management skills and attention to detail
  • Experience with non-profit digital fundraising preferred
  • Experience conducting collateral-gathering trips in developing countries preferred
  • Ability to learn quickly, prioritize projects, work efficiently and effectively, and meet deadlines
  • Collaborative team player
  • Experience with HTML/CSS and WordPress, Google Analytics, Adobe Creative Suite, EveryAction, Asana, Classy, and Salesforce preferred
  • Ability to meet regular attendance/tardiness policy
  • Ability to work under pressure and handle stress
