Environmental Scientist / Engineer

Applied Marine Sciences, Inc. (AMS) has an immediate opening for a highly motivated mid-level environmental scientist / engineer to join our Santa Cruz, CA office. The position allows the successful candidate to experience all facets of the AMS work experience, including supporting our clients’ needs by taking on active roles in environmental data collection, management, analysis, and reporting efforts.
 
ABOUT THE POSITION
AMS incorporates a professional staff with specialties in marine biology, aquatic chemistry, oceanography, environmental engineering, and statistical design and analysis to name just a few. The work we conduct varies greatly over time, based largely on our evolving understanding of the aquatic environment, the requirements of our clients, and the interests of our staff.
 
The duties of the advertised position will also evolve to reflect the successful candidate’s skillset, interests, and ability to take on new responsibilities. Initial tasks are expected to include participation in study design, field sampling, quality assurance, and data analysis and interpretation efforts.
 
The successful candidate will have:
 
·     Excellent written, organizational, and time management skills
·     A Master’s degree in an environmental science or engineering field (or Bachelor’s plus relevant experience)
·     Expertise in applying ArcGIS tools for sampling design, mapping, and spatial analysis
·     Ability to work independently and in collaboration with internal staff and external partners
·     Valid driver’s license
·     Willingness to engage in short-term travel to project locations
·     Ability to work from boats in coastal waters and estuaries
 
Specific technical skills of benefit to this position may include, but are not limited to, familiarity with the following:
 
·     Electronic sampling equipment use and maintenance
·     State and federal water regulations
·     Scientific diving
·     Database applications
·     Statistical analysis and R-Program experience
·     Scientific writing
·     Familiarity with ArcGIS
