PAID INTERNSHIP - Archive Intern [TALLER PUERTORIQUENIO]

The main project will be deaccessioning our collection of books, media such as VHS tapes and cassette tapes, and finding-aid documents. In addition, intern will assist with book donations i.e locating libraries and schools that we may donate our deaccessioned material to. First, intern will receive training from the archivist regarding what things we keep in the archives versus what items we do not keep. Archivist will provide information and guidelines to assist the intern's learning process around how to deaccession.   

The second project is updating our finding-aid and looking through our collection to determine what materials we should keep or deaccession as well as locate any missing items and cataloging new donations. Our intern will also work on data entry and cataloging to help us track the condition of items and the reasons for deaccessioning each item. 

Intern Responsibilities:
  • Under the direction of the Archivist, you will survey and assess archival material, help with student art workshops and engage in community events.
  • Intern and Archivist will together determine which days and schedule fulfills the requirements needed.
  • Interns will also assist with art workshops that include culturally specific mask-making, jewelry-making, and paper puppet-making.
  • For this part of the internship, the workflow includes, helping with set-up, clean-up, inventory of art materials, as well as assisting visitors during the workshop itself. This can include providing extra assistance to participants with the art project they are working on in the workshop. Participants include visitors of all ages, sometimes kids, students, young professionals, elders, etc.    

Qualifications:
  • In this position interns will have to have basic knowledge of the preservations and conservation practices for historical records.
  • Our intern will have excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Interest in library services and a willingness to learn.
  • Ability to work in a multicultural environment is a must.
  • Bilingual Spanish-English written and verbal skill set is preferred.
