Digital Content Internship, Summer 2023 (Remote)

Internship Description: Americans United for Separation of Church and State (AU) seeks a Digital Content Intern to assist the Communications Department in a remote role. The Digital Content Intern will report to the Director of Digital Communications and will help manage SEO for AU’s website, execute keyword research and post-optimize published articles to make them more SEO friendly.

Interns have the opportunity to meet and learn from staff across the organization including outreach, policy, and legal departments. They will get to connect with and learn alongside a cohort of summer interns working in various departments at AU. All interns also have the opportunity to be published on AU’s Wall of Separation blog.

Responsibilities:
  • Assist communications team in developing SEO strategies to boost website traffic.
  • Research and analyze SEO trends and news to find areas for improvement and new ranking opportunities for AU.
  • Conduct keyword research.
  • Assist communications team in optimizing published website content to make it more SEO friendly.
  • Evaluate and report on KPIs (key performance indicators) to measure the progress and performance on specific objectives.

Preferred Skillset: The strongest candidates will be able to demonstrate a commitment to the separation of religion government; be responsible, hard-working, and excited to work with diverse staff and supporters; and have some or all of these skills:
  • Writing concisely and persuasively.
  • Meeting deadlines and communicating about progress.
  • Engaging with the public and recruiting supporters to take action.
  • Basic website organization, content curation and HTML.
  • Familiarity with Google Analytics, Google Keyword Planner, Google Drive and Wordpress.

Time Commitment: The internship is 25 hours/week from May 30 – August 4 (with some flexibility to accommodate the intern’s academic or other scheduling needs). The intern will attend weekly all-staff meetings, team meetings, 1:1 meetings with their supervisor, and workshops for the summer intern cohort.

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, with priority given to applications received by April 24. Interviews will begin being scheduled May 1 and hiring decisions made by May 12. No calls, please. 

Benefits: The Digital Content Intern will be paid a stipend of $4,025. Interns receive substantive experience with in-depth exposure to some of the most important issues facing the country. Interns are provided and encouraged to take time to learn across the organization.

AU can provide documentation for academic credit upon successful conclusion of the internship.

AU has a staff of over 30 people and 5-10 interns during the summer. Staff communicate via Outlook email, zoom meetings, and Slack.
