Communications Writing Internship, Summer 2023 (Remote)

Internship Description: Americans United for Separation of Church and State (AU) seeks a Communications Writing Intern to assist the Communications Department in a remote role. The Communications Writing Intern will report to the Editor of AU’s monthly Church & State magazine and daily “Wall of Separation” blog and assist with writing and production of the blog and magazine content. 

Interns have the opportunity to meet and learn from staff across the organization including communications, policy, and legal departments. They will get to connect with and learn alongside a cohort of summer interns working in various departments at AU. 

Responsibilities
  • Researching and writing blog posts for AU’s daily “Wall of Separation” blog.
  • Researching and writing magazine articles and book reviews for AU’s monthly Church & State magazine.
  • Other writing duties as assigned, potentially including SEO-driven content for AU’s website.
  • Assist with proofreading copy.

Preferred Skillset: The strongest candidates will be able to demonstrate a commitment to the separation of religion government; be responsible, hard-working and excited to work with diverse staff and supporters; and have the following skills:
  • Strong writing, editing and proofreading skills.
  • Must be able to meet a daily deadline.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Word and Google Drive.
  • Familiarity with Associated Press style guide a plus but not required.
  • Familiarity with Wordpress a plus but not required.

Time Commitment: The internship is 20 hours/week from May 31 – August 6 (with some flexibility to accommodate the intern’s academic or other scheduling needs). The intern will attend weekly all-staff meetings, team meetings, 1:1 meetings with their supervisor, and workshops for the summer intern cohort.

  • A resume (one page) outlining your relevant academic, campus and professional experience
  • A cover letter (one page) describing how your experience relates to the Writing/Communications Internship and explaining why AU’s mission is important to you
  • A short writing sample (no more than 800 words) on any topic that has recently been in the news. The writing sample should take the form of a blog post.

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, with priority given to applications received by April 24. Interviews will begin being scheduled May 1 and hiring decisions made by May 12. No calls, please. 

Benefits: The Communications Writing Intern will be paid a stipend of $3,220. Interns receive substantive experience with in-depth exposure to some of the most important issues facing the country. The Communications Writing Intern will receive bylines in AU’s “Wall of Separation” blog and Church & State magazine. AU interns are provided and encouraged to take time to learn across the organization. 

AU can provide documentation for academic credit upon successful conclusion of the internship.

AU has a staff of over 30 people and 5-10 interns during the summer. Staff communicate via Outlook email, zoom meetings, and Slack.
