MENTOR Government Relations Summer Intern

This 10-week internship will begin on the week of 6/5 and end on the week of 8/7.

The intern will self-select their regular 20 hour/week schedule, but is expected to attend weekly Government Relations team meetings on Mondays at 10:30am EST, at minimum. The intern will be invited to join coalition meetings, including weekly Committee for Education Funding (CEF) meetings on Fridays at 9:30am EST; biweekly Out of School Time Coalition meetings on Tuesdays at 1pm EST; and more. 

The intern will also be invited to gatherings such as biweekly MENTOR National staff meetings and other National and Government Relations team-hosted meetings, such as Youth Mentoring Advocacy Coalition Meetings, Affiliate Advocacy Advisory Committee Meetings, and more. Interns will also meet one-on-one weekly with their supervisor to answer questions and keep work projects flowing. 

If the intern is local, MENTOR will cover the costs of multiple trips to Capitol Hill to join the team for advocacy meetings. 

Other projects the intern will work on include the following:
  • Schedule and join meetings with elected officials in coordination with MENTOR Government Relations team staff and other mentoring advocates
  • Check MENTOR’s legislation tracking system to flag relevant state and federal bills for the Government Relations team
  • Communications support for the MENTOR Advocate newsletter, social media, and grassroots actions
  • “Advocacy August” planning support, including drafting external communications and action alerts
  • Research partner organization’s grassroots advocacy efforts and make recommendations to implement into MENTOR’s programs
  • Draft and develop at least one new resource for youth mentoring advocates to utilize

Compensation: The intern will be expected to work 20 hours/week and will be paid a lump sum of $4,000 (approx. $20/hour).
