PAID INTERNSHIP| COLLECTIONS & ARCHIVES INTERN [NATIONAL MUSEUM OF PUERTO RICAN ARTS AND CULTURE]

Intern Responsibilities:
  • As a Summer Intern at the National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture, the intern will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in collections management, archives, curating, and exhibition installation (de-installation).
  • The intern will learn about the principles of collections management, which includes the care, preservation, and organization of collections materials.  They also will be exposed to curating and exhibition installation.
  • As a small community museum in the process of implementing a new archive and collections system.
  • The intern will have the unique chance to learn from the ground up and provide input, ideas, suggestions to enhance our archiving and collection process. 

In addition, the intern will learn about the various roles and responsibilities of operating and managing a community museum.  
  • Cataloging: The intern will learn how to catalog and describe collections materials, including creating and maintaining inventory and data. 
  • Preservation: The intern will learn about best practices for preserving collections materials, including proper storage and handling. This includes exhibitions on loan. 
  • Accessioning: The intern will learn about the process of accessioning, which is the formal transfer of ownership of collections materials to an organization, including how to create accession records and donor agreements. 
  • Research: The intern will learn about the research process for record-keeping and collections management.  
  • Outreach: The intern will learn about outreach efforts related to collections management, including how to engage with the community, create educational programs and exhibits, and use social media to promote collections. 
  • Technology: The intern will learn about the different types of technology used in collections management, including our Artwork Archive collections management.
