Wolof Volunteer Interpreter

Reports to: Health and Wellness Dept. Manager
Start Date: July 12, 2023
Location: Manhattan, New York
Duration: 5-Months (be available at least twice a month for interpretation on Wednesdays for a few hours)
Unpaid Position: May be provided a stipend however.

 
BACKGROUND:
The International Rescue Committee(IRC)
responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive
and rebuild their lives. At work in over 40 countries and 29
U.S. cities to restore safety, dignity, and hope, the IRC leads the way from
harm to home.  
 
SCOPE OF VOLUNTEER WORK: The
Wolof Volunteer Interpreter is a volunteer position to support the IRC in NY’s Health
and Wellness workshops. The Community Interpreter language on increasing language
access to facilitate clear communication between clients and staff to support
refugees and other immigrants and help build resilience and emotional wellness.
 
The ideal candidates will have prior experience in the field of interpretation (formally or informally). They must also be available for a 4-6-month period, twice a week.  Due to the nature of the program, the Community Interpretation volunteer may not need to volunteer for a set amount of hours every week but should be available for a minimum of eight hours per week. (This position may be eligible to be renumerated with a stipend.)
 
RESPONSIBILITIES:  
·      Provide interpretation for
clients and IRC staff for health and wellness workshops starting on July 12
·      Be able to travel to Manhattan twice a week starting in July
·      Communicate effectively
in person
·      Adhere to IRC policies,
particularly those related to confidentiality and client privacy. 
 
REQUIREMENTS:  
The ideal candidates will have experience in interpretation 
·  Candidate must be male-identifying 
·  Be available for 4-6 months, twice a week
·  Ability to fluently speak Wolof 
·  Ideally have experience working with immigrants or refugees in a social service setting 
·  Must have excellent verbal English language skills 
·  Must be willing to work varied hours Monday-Friday between 9 am and 6 pm 
·   Must be over 18 years of age 
·   Basic computer skills
(Microsoft Access and Word, E-mail) 
·   Ability to pass a background check 
·   Adhere to professional standards of confidentiality and boundary-setting 
 
This position reports to the Health and Wellness Department Manager.
