Pacific Council 2017 Fall Junior Fellows Program

Program Description

Designed for students and recent graduates with a demonstrated interest in international affairs, the Pacific Council Junior Fellows Program is an opportunity for individuals of junior professional background to gain experience in international relations through a member-based non-profit. Individuals selected will complete projects in the departments of Operations, Membership, Communications, Trips, and Development. Tasks will include but are not limited to: assistance with event programming, logistics, writing, editing, research, membership administration, and general administrative assistance. Additionally, Fellows will produce a term project advancing a key organizational priority and present their findings to the Pacific Council staff upon the completion of their Fellowship.

Eligibility
Eligible candidates must be in their junior or senior level of undergraduate courses, a graduate student, or a recent graduate of either with a degree in international relations or related subjects; must have a strong academic record; and must be eligible to work at least 15 hours a week in the Pacific Council office in downtown Los Angeles – days are flexible. Candidates should have prior experience in a professional office setting, excellent written, oral communication and computer skills, strong attention to detail, resourcefulness and creativity, and the capacity to balance and efficiently prioritize a range of responsibilities. Interest in international policy and a commitment to the Pacific Council’s mission is critical.

Application & Submissions
Applications must be submitted by Friday, January 5. Candidates identified as finalists will be notified and interviewed by telephone or in person from January 9-12. Positions will be extended no later than January 16. The Spring 2018 Junior Fellows program will begin January 22 and run through April 27. No applications will be considered complete until the following items are received by the Pacific Council: cover letter; current resume; completed Jr. Fellows application, and a brief writing sample. Professional Development

On a bi-weekly basis, Pacific Council staff will lead you across different professional development modules. We strive to customize the sessions based on your interests, but past session have included: Advanced Excel & Salesforce, Career Skills 101 e.g. Resume and negotiation skills, Research Tips & Tricks, Soft Skills in the Workplace, Overview of Nonprofits etc. 

Mentorship & Coaching

Fellows will participate in bi-weekly check-ins with the Fellowship coordinator and regular check-ins with their supervisors. During these times, we will assess areas for your growth and support to ensure a productive and enjoyable Fellowship experience for you. We also provide a modest fund for you to take staff out to coffee to learn more about their career trajectories and build new professional relationships. Your social and professional growth is important to us!  

Access to Pacific Council events

We are thrilled to offer event access to our Fellows over the course of the term. You can see the types of events we’ve held in the past here. Fellows will also get access to our conference level events including our annual Members Weekend and Spring Conference. 

Modest Financial Support

The Junior Fellows program is unpaid, however a $500 stipend will be awarded at the end of the term. We also reimburse for all parking or public transit related to office and event travel.
