Biometrician

Exciting opportunity for a Biometrician to make a vital impact on fish and aquatic habitat conservation! Working alongside the Senior Biometrician, this key position analyzes data collected in the field and provides conservation solutions through advanced statistical analysis, mathematical modeling, simulations, and summarization. This full-time position is based out of our West Sacramento, CA or Auburn, CA office.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

· Conduct advanced statistical analysis, simulation modeling, mathematics, and programming to help resolve challenging resource management problems.

· Collaborate with Biologists to develop models and quantitative assessments for ecological data.

· Serve as a data analyst to develop models and to creatively analyze data.

· Common studies include estimates of abundance and survival from mark-recapture studies, demonstrating the effects of restoration by evaluating pre and post conditions, and assessing remotely sensed data to derive habitat metrics.

· Modeling projects often include relating resource management actions to behavior and life-cycle dynamics of salmonids or other sensitive aquatic organisms, and to guide prioritization of recovery actions or monitoring progress towards recovery.

· Studies and modeling projects often require working with established models to update results based on newly available data and research.

· Review data summarization and analysis by Technicians and junior Biologists.

· Provide guidance and expertise on hypothesis testing, data collection, and statistical analysis.

· Write and edit technical documents, as well as potential presentation of data and findings at scientific conferences.

· Provide critical review of reports, analyses, experimental designs, and sampling plans.

· Partner with scientists to develop results through learning scientific research and resolving complex problems to achieve goals.

Education/Minimum Qualifications:

· Master's degree with one or more years of related experience with mathematical modeling and statistics. Ph.D. in a related field a plus.

· Statistical analysis and study design experience, particularly in data management, developing predictive models, and developing sampling and experimental designs.

· Strong knowledge and skills in modeling techniques.

· Team collaboration and participation to meet high performance and quality standards of CFS.

· Strong technical writing and advanced computer skills.

· Comfortable with at least one common statistical software environment (R, Python, etc.).

· Demonstrated skills in complex data management, developing predictive models, graphs, and data analysis.

· Able to communicate project methods and findings in presentations and reports.

Preferred Experience:

· Computer programming software skills in Python, R, Stan. Experience with Automation, Software development, Machine learning, or Interactive online data tools (e.g., R Shiny).

· Experience in collection and analysis of complex ecological datasets through sampling design, gap analysis, and database design and use.

· Experience in fisheries, forestry, or other science related fields.

· Preferred experience conducting salmonid life cycle modeling, mark-recapture studies, restoration applications, and natural resource management.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands:

· Long periods of computerized data analysis in an office environment.

· Working irregular hours to meet project deadlines.

· Occasional travel.

Compensation: $70,000 - $92,000/year (depending upon experience). 401 (k) has a 3% match and full vesting after one year. The annual cash bonus has a 3% target.
