ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability USA, Inc. is an Equal Opportunity Employer. Women, Black, Indigenous, and People of Color, veterans, members of the LGBTQ+ communities, and other underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged to apply.

About ICLEI

ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability (ICLEI) is the first and largest global network of more than 2,500 local and regional governments devoted to solving the world’s most intractable sustainability challenges. The worldwide network is active in 125+ countries, focused on influencing sustainability policies and driving local action across five key pathways: low emissions, resilient, equitable, people-centered,  nature-based, and circular development.

As the USA Office of a global ICLEI network,  ICLEI USA develops and delivers leading-edge tools and resources, including its state-of-the-art emissions-management tool, ClearPath Climate Planner, to support local governments in their climate change efforts. Our standards, tools, and programs credibly, transparently, and robustly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve lives and livelihoods, and protect natural resources in the U.S. communities we serve. ICLEI USA and our network partners are working to keep 1.5 ℃ alive through a data-driven approach and focus on just and equitable communities.

About Our Members

Our local government members — including cities, counties, towns, tribal nations, and regions — are the core of our organization. Our network of government professionals is the catalyst for a movement toward deep reductions in carbon pollution and tangible improvements in sustainability and resilience. For over 30 years, ICLEI USA has partnered with our members to reduce emissions and become healthier, stronger, and more prepared.

Our membership’s needs and opportunities are evolving  —  driven by a deepening climate and inequality crisis but also a historic federal investment in climate change.  ICLEI USA is positioned to both increase our membership numbers and diversify the range of sustainability themes each member participates in.

Your Role

The Membership Program Associate (“Associate”) has an important role in ensuring that all ICLEI’s member-support plans, known as the Member Journey, are effectively recorded, monitored, and delivered by our membership team and technical experts. As the primary support to the five-person Membership Team, the Associate functions as a “member success” accelerator by connecting ICLEI’s members to the technical service and knowledge they need to advance their climate and sustainability goals.

The Associate’s day-to-day tasks can look like record-keeping and account management for each ICLEI member government (primarily using Salesforce), collating resources promised to each member following their regular check-in calls with Member Advisors, reporting on progress (or alerting to slow-downs) from these check-ins, and making connections between a member and ICLEI USA’s Technical Team experts.  The structure of our Membership Team is based on geographic region, with each of the four Member Advisors serving all member governments located within the states in their assigned region. In the Associate’s support functions, they will be responsible for supporting all Membership Advisors and their regions; the Associate will not be assigned local governments to manage directly.

In addition to working toward member success, the Associate serves a knowledge management role by helping the ICLEI team understand trends and opportunities across our member communities.  The Associate will compile an all-network status report quarterly. Knowledge management will also include maintaining our member-resource library and fostering city-to-city connections in the online ICLEI Community platform (hosted on Salesforce). Finally, the Associate will provide administrative support to ICLEI USA’s annual learning cohorts.

This broad and challenging set of responsibilities is best suited for an individual who has demonstrated the ability to take initiative and work independently and collaboratively. This fully remote position requires 4-5 hours of video conference calls several days each week.  Success requires a high-energy and personable approach with an exceptional ability for follow-through, accountability, and attention to detail.

Responsibilities

  • Record outcomes from calls or meetings between ICLEI members and their Membership Advisors. Track member progress over time. Provide any follow-up to the appropriate membership advisor within 48 hours of each member check-in call by compiling necessary resources, templates, etc, or by making connections to one of ICLEI’s Technical Team advisors.
  • Provide quarterly analysis to identify trends and opportunities impacting our member communities. Make recommendations to the Membership and Technical Teams to better deliver our service. Analysis may include technical support needs demanded by members; new state or federal policies relevant to our network; peer-to-peer connections; research requests and FAQs; and more.
  • Support the Membership Team Lead in developing and implementing an annual Member Engagement and Networking Strategy. This will include but is not limited to: the development and management of a Member Advisory Committee; a quarterly ICLEI 101 call for new members; administering weekly office hours (technical + general membership focused); planning or facilitating regional networking and cohort opportunities; and developing educational workshops or webinars.
  • Prepare and send member dues invoices. Provide follow-up when dues are received or are delinquent.
  • Support the development of the annual Membership Program budget and strategic vision.
  • Stimulate conversation and peer-to-peer connection in the ICLEI Community online platform.
  • Maintain ICLEI’s member-resource library, developing toolkits of “best-in-class” resources.
  • Represent ICLEI and its members at meetings and conferences, on occasion.

Position Requirements

  • Eligible applicants will have experience, or a strong interest in,  working with local governments on the topics of sustainability,  climate adaptation/preparedness, and climate change mitigation.
  • 2 or more years of experience in account management, client/customer service, local government, research and data analysis, or other relevant roles.
  • Preferred candidates will have an undergraduate degree in planning, policy, environmental science, communications, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, interpersonal, work planning, communications, and writing skills.
  • An ability to work independently in a dynamic and evolving organization is required.
  • Excellent notetaking and customer-service tracking are a must.
  • The ideal candidate will have used Salesforce or similar CRM.
  • Proficiency using Microsoft and Google suites, Asana for project management, as well as Slack for internal messaging.
  • Customer service experience is preferred; a service-oriented approach is essential.

Location

This is a remote position open to candidates located within the United States. If the successful candidate is located in the Denver, Colorado, area, they will have access to ICLEI’s coworking space.
