Electronics Engineer/Computer Scientist, ZP-0855/1550-3/4 | Ann Arbor, MI

NOAA's Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory (GLERL) located in Ann Arbor, MI is hiring (1) Electronics Engineer/Computer Scientist, ZP-0855/1550-3/4 (ZP-3 is equivalent to GS-11; ZP-4 is equivalent to GS-12/13)The announcement will be open for 14 days; it is set to open on 3/21/2024 and close on 4/4/2024.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop technical guides and establish technical architectures to provide new and unprecedented system and network observational capabilities. Provide technical expertise, advice, and guidance for preparation of observing system research efforts. Lead development of meteorological and oceanographic instrumentation integration programming, data transmission programming of remotely deployed technology, and data storage systems.
  • Establish technical requirements by managing and conducting research into new marine observation system technology or methods, determining system requirements, and coordinating efforts with field scientists. Document all stages of development, results, and finalized products and present information via instruction, manuals, etc. Oversee the development of training and guidelines. Train the trainer and provide educational opportunities to staff participating in functional areas.
  • Lead testing and utilization of new approaches and/or systems and equipment. Experiment, investigate, and test methods and equipment/software to produce new data, models, or methods to test concepts, formulate design criteria, and measure and predict performance. Develop standards and test plans to assure reliability. Design and develop prototypes, systems and software, and models, directing development and fabrication as required.
  • Evaluate data necessary to contribute to the development of technology improvement projects. Evaluate available criteria, determine feasibility, and direct the team in the modification of collection or testing procedures. Develop, maintain, and distribute standardized procedures for assigned methods or technology.

NOTE: These duties are described at the full performance level of the ZP-4; the ZP-3 is developmental leading to such performance.

 

  • Supporting research and development of marine observation system technology and instrumentation; and
  • Participating in the development of observing system products.
  • Establishing requirements, plans, and experiments for the development of observing system products;
  • Coordinating research and development of marine observation system technology and instrumentation; and
  • Performing basic or applied research or engineering to advance the application of concepts such as electronics, electro-mechanics or computer sciences.
