Job Summary:

 

The School of Mechanical, Industrial, and Manufacturing Engineering invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, fixed-term Research Associate position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the School Head.

 

The purpose of this position is to conduct original research within the area of metals in extreme environments. The role includes performing independent research as part of a collaborative team and assists with the research, training, and mentorship of undergraduate and graduate students.

Key Responsibilities

 

60% Research and Publication/DisseminationConduct original and collaborative scientific research in the field metals for extreme environments. Analyze, interpret, and draw conclusions from data and provide reporting to summarize the progress and results of projects, which may be used for publication or other dissemination. Perform background research and literature reviews. Prepare conference and journal article drafts, edit manuscripts, respond to reviewer comments, and coordinate co-author edits and responses to reviewers. Assist in preparation of proposals for new research based on research progress/findings. Assist in preparation and editing of marketing and communication materials.

 

30% Laboratory Management and SupportManage and support metallurgical research laboratory including software/hardware integration and testing, safety compliance, procedure documentation, supplies purchasing, equipment maintenance, repair, and calibration services. Develop, document, and maintain standard procedures for experiments. Write equipment proposals. Assist with supervision and direction for undergraduate and graduate assistants and employees on research design, experimental procedures, lab operations, and equipment use.

 

10% Project Management and Other Duties as AssignedIndependently monitor the timely progress towards meeting technical milestones on projects, prepare reports for sponsors, and manage equipment/supplies budgets. Attend meetings with other project collaborators. Meet with scientists and coordinate information transfer, communication, and data sharing. Depending upon availability/need, teach up to one materials science course per academic year.

 

What You Will Need

 

• Ph.D. in Materials Science or related field

• Experience performing corrosion experiments

• Excellent written and oral communication skills

 

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

 

What We Would Like You to Have


 

• Ph.D. dissertation topic relevant to metals in extreme environments

• Publication and/or presentation of research in peer-reviewed journals or at conferences

• Experience with additive manufacturing of metals

• Characterization experience with scanning electron microscopy

• A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.

 

Working Conditions / Work Schedule

 

Work in a laboratory environment, some work with chemicals. Occasional weekend work for travel to conferences may be required.
