Data Steward I

Great opportunity for a full-time Data Steward I in our River Restoration and Research lab in West Sacramento, CA. The Data Steward I will provide field, lab, and office support for science and operations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Under direction of Data Stewardship Manager, coordinate data management efforts including data entry/QC; data and sample tracking; database creation/updates; data reporting; and datasheet creation/updates.
  • Communicate with technicians and project managers to ensure that data is processed in a timely manner, following protocols and maintaining high quality standards .
  • Train technicians on laboratory and field data collection methods; this includes infrequent field work.
  • Submit data to open-source repositories, such as the Environmental Data Initiative (EDI) or the Environmental Research Division Data Access Program (ERDAPP).
  • Perform basic data analysis and develop summary reports under the supervision of Senior staff.
  • Assist Senior staff with background research, developing protocols, developing data management plans for new projects.


CRITICAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Organizational Skills: Coordination of data management including tracking, reporting, and quality assurance/ quality control. 

Project Management Skills: Support Senior staff on several projects including field and laboratory preparation and coordination, data management, and training. Resourceful, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively to find creative solutions to problems. Produce accurate high-quality work products on time.

Team Leadership Skills: Contribute to the team and Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) culture, view all team members as important and treat them with respect and professionalism. Hold high personal performance and quality standards to enable the team to be successful. Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills and to express and exchange ideas and to communicate with CFS team members and landowners, stakeholders, and clients.

IT Software Knowledge: Demonstrated experience with programming languages (R and/or Python), relational database software (i.e. Access or SQL), spatial data software and tools (ArcGIS and/or QGIS).

IT Hardware Knowledge: Demonstrated experience with iPads, Android tablets, PCs, laptops, etc.

Science-Business balance: This individual should be passionate about science and natural resources.

 
EDUCATION / MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Fisheries, Forestry, Biology or similar field 
  • Mid-level skills in data entry into databases, developing graphs and basic data analysis
  • Proficient with MS Office Suite including Excel, PowerPoint, and Word


DESIRED EXPERIENCE

  • Experience collecting data in the field or laboratory.  
  • Familiarity with state and federal permit reporting requirements.
  • Environmental science experience including stream ecology, forestry, fisheries, or related field.


WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Possible long periods of computerized work in an office environment
  • Working irregular hours on occasion to meet project deadlines
  • Travel work may require extended travel for 1-2 days at a time

COMPENSATION: $27 - $35 per hour (depending upon experience). 401 (k) has a 3% match and full vesting after one year. The annual cash bonus has a 3% target. Benefit package includes medical, dental, vision, basic life, long-term disability, flexible spending accounts, employee assistance programs, PTO, paid company holidays, and other various voluntary benefits.

ESOP: CFS is a 100% employee-owned company. Our employee stock option plan (ESOP) is a qualified defined contribution plan. Our target ESOP contribution is 5%. Eligibility is after one year of service with an entry date of Jan 1 or July 1.
