I loved the organization and the people I worked with. Everyone cared about the mission and vision. The internship program was very active and interactive. We got to meet with various departments to learn about ACT and potential career paths. They really cared about our personal growth as well as the work we were doing. I really like that it was remote as well.
What I wish was different
I think there’s pluses and minuses to being remote. I really liked the flexibility of it, but I do feel like I lost a sense of interaction if I were in an office.
Advice
I learned how to take initiative and be confident in the work I was doing. I was hired because I was qualified and the team wanted the knowledge and experience I was bringing. I learned to be confident in myself.

What I liked
The people were amazing! All so helpful and friendly. They gave me the technology and tools to succeed and also helped me learn before having me do my own individual projects.
What I wish was different
It was a fully virtual internship, which was a bummer but they did the best they could.

Science Test Development Intern
June - August 2019 • Iowa City, IA
What I liked
The work environment was great. I was able to work with a multitude of doctorate level science writers continuously. I worked independently and was given a surplus of freedom. The campus was beautiful and I was able to take breaks from work and go outside. Also ACT has a great internship program which allowed me to meet a variety of students from a lot of different backgrounds.
What I wish was different
I wish I was given an opportunity to do more projects, I felt like I was doing a lot of repetitive work. There were two of us doing the same role/projects, and I would have preferred to work independently.
Advice
I would be open to asking questions, because the test development process is very complex. Also, the majority of the people I was working with went to graduate school, so asking them questions about the process was really helpful.
