Cleveland Guardians Baseball

Stand Captain

March - October 2019 • Cleveland, OH

What I liked

I loved being at the ballpark everyday, interacting with fans and being able to be apart of every single home game and the 2019 MLB All-Star Weekend

What I wish was different

I wish that I could've ran one of the bigger stores in the ballpark, I think that I would've liked having a bigger challenge

Advice

If you have a chance to work in the merchandise department for the Cleveland Indians throughout your time at Cleveland State, I highly recommend doing so! You are at the ballpark everyday and get to see the players and staff everyday and get to build big connections throughout the whole organization that may lead you to big opportunities down the road

Communications Intern

May - August 2019 • Cleveland, OH

What I liked

It was an all-inclusive experience that helped me learn a lot about working for a professional organization.

What I wish was different

That it had been longer so I could have been immersed more into the everyday grind working for an MLB team.

Advice

To always put yourself out there for any job and trust your experience and skills. Be genuine and willing to learn anything and take in everything that your internship offers you to take advantage of.

What I liked

The atmosphere and the job duties themselves. There’s never a dull moment, always high energy and never a time where I’m bored at work.

What I wish was different

The people, unfortunately we had a problem with some of my coworkers. However our boss was really amazing and she ensured that the problematic people would not be returning. That was a major factor for a lot of people that made the experience less amazing.

Advice

It’s still the best job I’ve ever had, I’m returning for year three. I think it’s important if you’re considering a job like this, just apply! It could turn out to be one of the best things you’ve done.

What I liked

I loved this internship and everything about it. The most beneficial thing about this internship is not just the experience, but the networking opportunity it provides. The seasonal staff is all college students or recent grads so it was awesome to work alongside friends and those my age. The supervising staff is very supportive and always working with us to help better our experience and knowledge. Through this internship, you are able to gain strong customer service, time management, and problem-solving skills, along with much more! You are essentially working in the Cleveland Indians front office so you are constantly networking and working alongside those with full-time roles in ticketing, season tickets, event and experiences, ballpark operations, food and beverage and more.

What I wish was different

The only thing I wish could have been different was the hours sometimes. The Indians play 81 games at home and in this internship, you work during the games and some weeks it was a grind to get through! However, if a job in sports is really what you want then working long (and sometimes awkward) hours is what you are signing up for. Working these hours, however, has better prepared me for when I need to get a full-time job in sports.

Advice

One piece of advice I would like to share about this experience is to take full advantage of it all. When they ask for a volunteer, be that volunteer. When you are given a task, put 110% into that task. Network as much as you can and take full advantage of every opportunity you are given!

What I liked

Working in the front office of a MLB team was very nice. They were able to get connections with the higher ups faster and easier than the other seasonal employees.

What I wish was different

The pay would have been nicer if it was more considering all of the troubles and pains that we go through during the regular season. Of course the hours as well but that is sports and I got used to it pretty fast.

Advice

If you are looking for this job, be ready for long hours, tough phone calls, repetition and if there is a rain out of the game, be ready for a long day of exchanging tickets for thousands upon thousands of fans

What I liked

I liked interacting with the fans the most. It was really cool and a neat bonding experience to have. They were there to watch a baseball game, I was there to provide the best experience possible for them.

What I wish was different

I wish the Indians were able to go to the post season.

Advice

Try it out. Apply yourself to the team and go through the whole process because it is worth it.

What I liked

The thing that I liked most about working for the Cleveland Indians was the atmosphere for everyday that I worked there. The game day was a surreal experience because out of all 82 home games that they had, the atmosphere from the fans and people working there was always the same. Also, had the chance to work the All-star weekend festivities and there was a totally new atmosphere and people that I got to experience and meet. Cleveland really is a special place and working here this summer really opened my eyes up to this.

What I wish was different

The only thing that I wish would have been different, honestly, nothing. It was such a great experience for me that I enjoyed every part of it that I do not wish anything was different.

Advice

One piece of advice that I would give to someone about my experience is just to prepare yourself to do something different everyday. You have to be willing to go out of your comfort zone and do things that you never think you may have done. This internship this summer pushed me out of my comfort zone and made me a better professional.

What I liked

I enjoyed a lot of aspects of my internship, including having the ability to work at a ballpark throughout the summer. In addition, the office was incredibly welcoming and supportive. My coworkers and supervisors are absolutely spectacular people to work with and I have greatly enjoyed getting to know them and working alongside them. We had several bonding and training seminars that allowed me to not only perform my job more effectively, but also spend time with a great group of people. There are approximately five job stations during the game days, so I greatly appreciated the chance to try new things and have variety in my work.

What I wish was different

While it is unreasonable to ask for this in a job working with a professional sports team, I wish the work hours would have been different. We are required to work every game day, which is a very fun atmosphere to be a part of, but unfortunately required me to spend majority of my summer nights and weekends at work. It was difficult at times to be at work knowing my friends were enjoying their time off from their jobs and I couldn't enjoy it with them. Nonetheless, the Indians have been incredibly accommodating to my needs and my schedule and I am incredibly grateful for the experience.

Advice

My responsibilities focused heavily on customer service, so I would advise anyone who is interested to have strong interpersonal skills and patience. In addition, as I mentioned above, recognizing the hours are different from a typical 9-5 job is vital to one's scheduling and success in the job.

What I liked

Everyone at the organization was super kind and willing to help out if needed.

What I wish was different

Nothing. I learned so much from this experience.

Advice

Be kind to others. Just the smallest thing in life can make all the difference in the world to a person who is feeling down on their luck. So take the 5 seconds it takes to ask a person how their day has been going.
