EMD Serono, MilliporeSigma and EMD Electronics

finance intern

June - August 2021 • Allentown, PA

What I liked

Loved the team and the helpful nature of everyone at the firm. They care about your development and time even if you are remote.

What I wish was different

I wish the work was more engaging, but for others maybe this work would have been more interesting.

Advice

I would say to challenge yourself in the role. It is easy to only work on simple projects, but ask for more interesting ones!

Safety intern

May - August 2021 • St. Louis, MO

What I liked

I liked the opportunity to be a part of the safety team and learn a little bit about everything they did.

What I wish was different

I wish I had spent more time on site. Due to covid I spent about half my days at home working remotely.

Advice

Go get an internship! Whether it’s a requirement for you or not, it was a fantastic learning experience and it made me realize how much I knew in my field but also how much I still needed to learn.

Commercial Marketing Intern

May - August 2019 • St. Louis, MO

What I liked

What I wish was different

Advice

Be sure to be asking questions and learning from everyone you meet. Over the course of the summer, I made many connections and gained two mentors. The connections you make are just as important as the project you are working on, so be sure to take advantage of that.

Communication Specalist Intern

April - September 2020 • Burlington, MA

What I liked

I loved this internship so much. My favorite part was that I learned new something everyday. Interning through a global pandemic actually worked out in my favor. Since MilliporeSigma is a life science company, my role as a communication specialist primarily focused on the internal and external communications in regards to COVID-19

What I wish was different

I wish I could have been in the office more. This was completely out of my control given that the capacity was below half occupancy. I think that being in the office would have been easier to connect with co-workers and get answers to questions quicker.

Advice

I was really intimidated being a communication and media major working within the life science field. Over the course of my internship I was able to learn constantly about the industry and it was completely fine that I didn't know about life science.

Project Engineering Intern

May - August 2020 • Jaffrey, NH

What I liked

I was super excited to have an internship in-person during the summer of 2020, and the company did a good job of maintaining safe practices. I was encouraged to work as much from home as I could, but was still able to come in and be present if needed. The centralized coordinator for the interns at the site was extremely helpful and available to us, and coordinated tours and informational sessions for us to learn more about the plant and relevant topics. They also had a dedicated mentorship program where interns were paired with an employee in their field that was really helpful and also confidential.

What I wish was different

Although I initially interviewed with and was assigned to one manager, I was switched to a different one to put me on a higher priority project but was not told until I arrived onsite my first day. My new manager didn't take the time to make sure my tasks aligned with my interest and expertise, and since they were managing a high priority project didn't always have the time to devote to teaching an intern or helping me find an adequate workload. I would have liked to have had the time and resources to figure out a better working relationship with my manager.

Advice

Internships are very fast - come in knowing what you want to get out of the experience and communicate your expectations with your manager. It's likely easier to connect with people when you're working full time in person, but don't be afraid to ask for more work or things to do. Also know what pace of working environment is best for you - the team I was on dealt with more long-term projects whereas i was used to fast-paced environments and had to adjust my expectations.

strategy analyst

June - September 2019 • Burlington, MA

What I liked

The work environment, the building was beautiful, team members were very friendly and helpful

What I wish was different

A more structured internship program with more specific assignments. Much of my research was exploratory research, so while I did have the opportunity to talk to other members across departments, I spent a lot of time doing my own research on google. More hands on tasks could have helped but overall I still very much enjoyed my experience there.

Advice

Take risks, try something new. The company was extremely friendly and helpful with me during this experience.

The person who trained me taught well, fast pace working environment, awesome coworkers, and there is paid overtime.

What I wish was different

The training for all three shifts should be the exact same. This will reduce confusion on what needs to be done.

Chemical Intern

October 2018 • Milwaukee, WI

What I liked

- networking opportunities - real-life work experience - applying knowledge to real-life applications - made my own schedule - good pay

What I wish was different

- different tasks (mostly just data entry) - realized this is not the line of work I want to go into

Advice

It's been an awesome opportunity to gain career experience and apply what I've earned in the classroom. I'm glad I learned about the field and had networking opportunities. In the future, I know that the chemical industry is not for me - but I'm glad I realized it early on in my career.

Process Engineer Intern

May - August 2017 • Jaffrey, NH

What I liked

My supervisor was very nice and always willing to help. I never felt like I did not have resources available and was kept busy throughout my day. Also, there were various workshops throughout the three months for internship development, and everyone at the company had a teamwork mentality.

What I wish was different

Honestly, I feel that the experience was so positive and constructive that I would not change anything about it.

Advice

Always make yourself available to work. The supervisors are the ones who you want on your good side when looking for potential full-time employment. It is less important that you have all sorts of technical knowledge and can work independently, and much more important that you can communicate with your supervisor and boss with a good work ethic.
