Human Connections

Global Fellow

August - December 2019 • Bucerías, Nayarit

What I liked

Working as a Global Fellow among the Human Connections team has been one of the most unique, exciting and enriching experiences of my life so far. In only five months, I have considerably improved my Spanish and learnt multiple skills in various fields, from marketing to videography through human resources. They gave me major responsibilities such as creating video content, developing an outreach strategy, organising a fundraiser, and much more. As a French person, being immersed in Mexican culture and working with people from North America was at first destabilising because I was not familiar with neither of them. But, I have had the opportunity to meet very talentuous, inspiring, and open-minded people whom have given me a new perspective of the world. I went back to France a few weeks ago, and I realised that, this internship is also, and mostly, a cross-cultural and human experience as it helped me grow not only on a professional level but also on a personal level.

Advice

This fellowship is perfect for students or recent graduates interested in the social sector and looking for a unique experience in a non-profit organisation which would allow them to discover a new culture, develop new skills, connect with inspiring people, and have a real impact on the community and the world!

Summer Intern Program

June - July 2019 • Bucerías, Nayarit

What I liked

I was able to use my skills in ways that benefitted HC such as analysing the accounting documents to compile information about what they paid partners. I enjoyed learning about the different parts of Mexico and translating and summarizing this information into booklets. Group management and project planning and consulting with partners outside the organization are areas where I have gained skills.

What I wish was different

Sometimes the projects I was assigned seemed like busiwork. It took clarification and leadership to decide how we as interns could change and expand our assignments to work toward a meaningful goal.

Advice

Before embarking on a project, it is important to take a step back and honestly assess the worth of the project and whether it is feasible.
