Mutual of Omaha

Engineer I

November 2019 - July 2022 • Omaha, NE

What I liked

Executive leadership were always ahead of what the world was doing, from their people-first COVID response to their proactive handling of economic downturns.

What I wish was different

The culture at the team level needs to match the executives' vision. Leadership on most teams I worked on or with encouraged and rewarded terrible behavior towards peers and customers. Championing the company's official culture and values to try and change things for the better will make you an outsider.

Advice

Use Mutual of Omaha as a stepping stone in your career. Don't stay for more than 2 years or you may be fundamentally affected by the toxic culture at a pivotal point in your career, without another company to compare your experience with.

Workplace Solutions Intern

January 2019 • Omaha, NE

What I liked

I really enjoyed how Mutual of Omaha allowed me to see the impact I was making on the whole company. It can feel like you don’t have an impact when you work for a Fortune 500 company. But, from my manager all the way up to the CEO, everyone went out of their way to show us how we have improved the operations within Mutual of Omaha.

What I wish was different

I honestly would not change much about this job. We were given the opportunity to learn and grow and I felt this internship really got me ready to transition from student to full time professional.

Advice

I would advise anyone to stay curious. Managers appreciate when they see you have the desire to learn and improve you skill set. This will help create additional opportunities for you in the future.

Financial advisory intern

May - September 2019 • La Crosse, WI

What I liked

The people there were wonderful human beings who made me feel right at home.

What I wish was different

I would have liked to sit in on a couple more meetings.

Advice

Just push through the harder parts of it. I feel like there were a couple points were things got challenging, but that challenge didn't last more than a couple days ever.

Senior Finance Intern

May - August 2019 • Omaha, NE

What I liked

Ton of learning opportunities and the chance to work for a fortune 500 company. The interns also had many chances to meet with higher ups in the company as well as the CEO and CFO.

What I wish was different

Like most internship, sometimes you get stuck with some busy work but other than that I would change nothing about this experience

Advice

Be willing to reach out and try new things, the company is huge and wants to hire students/graduates that can learn easily and teach themselves new things.

Software Development Intern

May 2019 • Omaha, NE

What I liked

I enjoyed meeting the other interns, and participating in intern events throughout the summer. I met a lot of new friends that made the summer an unforgettable experience. I also enjoyed learning more about the different technologies I was interested in. Mutual encouraged me to pursue the areas of software I was interested in and learn as much as I could before the summer was over.

What I wish was different

If anything, I wish I could have indicated what area of software I was interested in. I feel like I could have learned more about technology and hit the ground running from the start of the summer.

Advice

Take advantage of every opportunity to learn something new. I learned new things this summer that I didn't think I would every be learning about, and I ended up enjoying it a lot. It opened up a lot of new doors for me, and it helped me realize what area of software I am interested in.

Credit Risk Analyst Intern

April 2017 • Omaha, NE

What I liked

I really enjoyed looking at various companies in the private placement market. These companies came from various sectors from around the globe. I also was able to improve my accounting and financial analysis skills.

What I wish was different

It is sometimes difficult to meet the minimum of 20 hours per week. Other than that, there are very few negatives to this job.

Advice

This is definitely an internship that you should pursue if you are interested in investment analysis and potentially becoming a CFA charterholder someday.
