Office Depot

Intern, eCommerce: SEO

May - August 2021 • Boca Raton, FL

What I liked

The company culture at Office Depot was awesome! Everyone is super nice and genuine. My manager and director were both supportive of my interests and were always looking for ways to push my skills. They gave me freedom to learn from my mistakes which was awesome. I also had the opportunity to create website articles that are still published to this day!

What I wish was different

I wish that I had been in person at the HQ, rather than being remote. I feel that in-office positions allow you to connect more and better with others in the company.

Advice

To be a sponge, and take advantage to learn as much as you can! If you soak up as many skills and opportunities you will be able to take those to your next position.

Merchandising technology intern

May - August 2019 • Boca Raton, FL

What I liked

What I liked most about my experience as a merchandising intern for Office Depot was the real opportunity to make an impact on the company. I led 2 projects that were put to action at the corporate and retail level. Seeing my hard work come to fruition as an intern motivates me for my future in merchandising and buying.

What I wish was different

I would not change anything about my experience.

Advice

My advice to any student going into a corporate level internship is to expect a difficult learning curve and embrace it with an open mind. Go to work with an unwavering commitment to work hard and be willing to learn and ask questions throughout the course of the internship. Your experience will depend on what you make of it.

Cashier Manager

August - December 2019 • Happy Valley, OR

What I liked

It's given me a lot of experience in the retail industry: how to interact with people in a happy and friendly manner, how to stay calm under stress or demanding circumstances, and how to think through a problem quickly and accurately.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had been given more hours-it was a part time job, and even though I've been given more hours recently due to the unexpected illness of a coworker, I'm still worried about financial security during the school year.

Advice

To stand up for yourself and not be afraid to ask questions. I wasn't paid for the first five weeks, because of a glitch in the system (and that continued almost through the entirety of my time there this year), and I wasn't confident enough in my position to ask about it. In reality, I wasn't the one at fault, and my manager has gone up the chain of command on my behalf in order to fix the problem. So the problem went on for far longer than it needed to because I wasn't confident enough.

Retail Salesperson

July 2018 • Memphis, TN

What I liked

It was simple work.

What I wish was different

The customers and the environment in which I worked. I hated every single moment if it! Not only was I expected to multitask on a level that made me feel ill, I was consistently disrespected by customers and because of the social culture of the work environment I had to accept the disrespect. I absolutely despise Office Depot.

Advice

Do not work there! Find some other place of business, try Walmart or Amazon. Office Depot is a dying company, and right it is showing the same trend that KMart did before it officially closed down; sales that no one came too, resistance to change, and most of all they don't care about their associates!
