Retail Sales Associate

May - July 2023 • Hickory, NC

What I liked

I liked building relationships with both new and existing customers because it allowed me to recommend products that best suit their needs or interests.

What I wish was different

I wish that they way we worked collaboratively to devise strategic ways to organize the sales floor didn’t vary between the manager on duty (MOD).

Advice

The best piece of advice for retail is to be approachable and friendly no matter the customer’s disposition because you could truly make their day better during an interaction.

Assistant Buyer

June - July 2023 • Los Angeles, CA

What I liked

I love the structure of the internship, there is a schedule laid out for you and you are truly immersed into the role of an Assistant Buyer. I love that you get to work with other interns throughout the internship. You are set up with a buyer, an intern mentor, and an HR mentor -- you have a nice group of people supporting you! I also appreciated the amount of training provided throughout the internships.

What I wish was different

I do not have much to say for things to be different other than having more bonding time with the other interns!

Advice

Never be afraid to ask questions, the people at Ross encourage you to ask questions! Do not be afraid to speak up or voice your opinion at the appropriate times!

Stockroom Worker

June - August 2018 • West Valley City, UT

What I liked

Started early so by the time I left I had gotten sufficient hours in and still had the rest of the day to myself. Fast-paced work.

What I wish was different

We were understaffed and some workers had to stay later than expected many days. We occasionally fell behind and had to make it up the next day. The music playing constantly is awful.

Advice

If you're looking for temporary, fairly easy work then it is great.

Cashier

June - August 2021 • Yakima, WA

What I liked

I liked being able to talk to customers and interact with them during any transactions or during shifts where I was cleaning the salesfloor.

What I wish was different

I wish that there would have been more help in other registers since it would get very congested at times, especially during the weekends.

Advice

I would tell anyone that wants to be a cashier here to be prepared to work in a very fast and hectic environment.

Assistant BUyer

June - July 2021 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I liked how nice everyone was, and how structured the program was. We had a pretty packed schedule all summer which was nice since the internship was remote.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship program was a few weeks longer because it was only 6 weeks, which made it difficult to learn everything about the assistant buyer role and Ross as a whole.

Advice

Anyone looking to work here should be open to learning a lot through listening and application. Everyone has so much to teach interns, and don't be afriad to ask questions and seek help!

Planning Intern

June - July 2021 • New York City, NY

What I liked

This was an amazing internship experience. It was very organized and well-thought-out to provide interns with a valuable learning experience and time to apply what we learned to a tangible project that contributed to the company.

What I wish was different

I did this internship during Covid, so I wish it had been in-person so I would have gotten more opportunities to chat and network with people I wasn't directly working with.

Advice

Everyone at Ross loves to help others, so don't be afraid to ask your questions. If anything, the person you ask will be happy that you asked even if they don't know the answer.

Buying Intern

July - August 2021 • New York City, NY

What I liked

The people at Ross are amazing. Anyone i came into contact with was friendly and made it an amazing learning experience. I also loved what i was learning, how to be a Buyer at Ross.

What I wish was different

I wish the program had been longer than 6 weeks.

Advice

I would take advantage of any opportunity that comes your way, no matter how 'small' you may think it is at the time. Also take notes and then moe notes! it can't hurt to also manage your time wisely and keep a planner. having a daily checklist and knowing what to prioritize is so important.

Buying Intern

June - July 2021 • New York City, NY

What I liked

The people that I met at this internship had to be my favorite part. All the staff from every department were amazing to work with and incredibly helpful. I never felt lost or overwhelmed, and I knew I had plenty of resources to reach out to if I needed to.

What I wish was different

I wish the program was longer, just to give us more time with our buyers and to experience even more with the company.

Advice

I would encourage everyone interested in the retail industry to apply to this position. I learned so much in such a short period of time, from amazing mentors. I know I could reach out to any of them right now, after the internship has come and gone and they would still offer me the same guidance as if I was still their intern. I never felt pressured to be the best, or know everything right off the bat. It was a learning experience and I would do it all over again, and probably learn even more than I did before.

Assistant Buyer Intern

June 2020 • New York City, NY

What I liked

Ross Stores Inc. is really focused on your professional development. They encouraged us to be curious, to ask questions, and to really walk away from this experience with new skills and a deeper understanding of their business.

What I wish was different

Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, our internship had to be moved to a virtual format. It was also shortened by nine weeks. If anything I just wish we could have had at least another week to really get some more on hands experience.

Advice

Be a student of your business. Never shy away from asking questions and always be curious! The employees at Ross Stores want to see you achieve and learn!

Supply Chain Management Intern

June - August 2019 • Perris, CA

What I liked

Higher management shadowed was kind and helpful throughout my entire experience. The Director of the distribution center and area manager were very helpful in ensuring I maximized my skills and took advantage of the daily operation learning processes.

What I wish was different

The training department/team can improve communication, proper business etiquete and scheduling to ensure the interns’ experience is more effective.

Advice

Never be afraid to ask questions. Supply chain management can be challenging if lack of training is experienced. Overall, take advantage of your learning experience and obtain as much knowledge as you can to become a more competitive asset in the job market or own business in the future.
