Samsung Electronics America

Strategy and Planning Intern

June - August 2020 • Ridgefield Park, NJ

What I liked

I liked that my supervisor gave constant feedback on my performance and acted as a mentor. Whenever I felt lost, I had my supervisor to guide me through my confusion. The work itself was enjoyable as well.

What I wish was different

I wish that the internship was held in person; however, due to COVID, the entire internship was online. I also wish that the equipment that was sent to me had fewer problems concerning IT. It was a constant struggle to get my equipment to work and was an annoyance to the rest of my team.

Advice

Go to everything. The more people that know you, your face, and your personality, the better. I honestly think that I received a return offer because I attended so many different events and committees.

Reverse Logistics Intern

June - August 2019 • Dallas, TX

What I liked

I was given three projects to work on, one of which was a strategic project working with other interns. By being put on three different projects, I received lots a wide breadth of experience that I may not have received at other companies.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have gotten to know my team a little before starting - knowing the team was essential to me being successful in my internship.

Advice

Be sure to connect with the hiring manager prior to the start date and discuss exactly what projects you will be working on and what full time opportunities you are interested in.

Product Marketing Intern

June - August 2018 • Ridgefield Park, NJ

What I liked

Coming into my internship, I was assigned a mentor in the company in addition to my hiring manager. They were both critical to my success at Samsung. They not only taught me the industry & workings of the company but used their positions of power to schedule one-on-one meetings for me with executives, the C-suite and employees on different teams. This gave me great exposure and I was able to network and even take on some work outside of my original job description based on what connections I had made and what had interested me. Before applying, I had done my research and found that Samsung was rated by WayUp as one of the top internship programs so I had this idea that Samsung really wanted their interns to gain the most out of their experiences. However I was still so surprised at how much they were willing to invest in me. I was able to travel as an intern to a week long conference in Dallas, I was able to work on a dark project (after signing multiple NDAs), I got to present to the CEO & SVP of marketing, I got to run focus groups and decide on messaging for the launch of a new product. I participated in the women's leadership group within the company, attended a volunteer day and "unpacked" events - which are launch events to the press and finally I received A LOT of Samsung swag.

What I wish was different

I honestly had a truly incredible experience and I understand that it was not a typical internship.

Advice

If you don't ask, the answer will always be "No". YOU have the potential to define your internship. If you find that something outside of your original job description interests you, ask your manager about it. Ask to sit in on meetings, ask for introductions, ask to travel & attend events. Just because it wasn't originally offered doesn't mean isn't an option. The worst thing that could happen is your manager says no and you continue working. The best thing that could happen - You meet new people, gain some experience and are one step closer to knowing what you want to do and what you don't want to do.
