Software Engineering Intern, Cabin & Network Applications Team

June - September 2021 • Everett, WA

What I liked

What I liked the most about my internship experience was the amount that I learned about connected a user-facing interface to backend structures. As an intern on the Cabin and Network Applications team, I: - constructed an Angular billing component for user-facing web service, enabling employees to retrieve and modify data (livestream hours and amount of data stored) of a new, in-flight cabin video monitoring service; - used Java and JavaScript, as well as HTML and CSS, to create a user interface for employees to search for a specific airline’s data; - implemented RESTful APIs in Java controller that I designed to retrieve data for the specified airline, from the backend; and - gained experience using build tools like Maven to build and update the web application with my additions

What I wish was different

I wish I had the chance to interact with other interns. I was the only intern on my team, so I primarily collaborated with my mentor, technical lead, and manager, all of whom were adults. Collaborating with other students would have given me the experience of developing solutions to challenges with someone who has had similar experiences as I did.

Advice

I would advise other interns to take full advantage of the knowledge that older team members have. Take time to sit down with other people on your team, not just your immediate mentor, to understand the path they took to get to their current position. This is very helpful as a Software Engineering intern, as there are so many lesser-known paths available to reach jobs in the industry.

What I liked

Professional working environment, clear work objectives and assignments, real-world and interesting projects, networking abilities, tours of facilities, application of education

What I wish was different

Advice

Make the most of your internship by taking on as many projects as you can and always say yes; you never know what will come of it.

Industrial Engineering Intern

May - August 2021 • Everett, WA

What I liked

Gaining professional experience, having a 1-on-1 mentor and project, getting to tour the company within my working hours, getting to have informational interviews with company employees, feeling connected to the company community.

What I wish was different

Not a priority, but would have been nice to have known my program department explicitly before arriving. Knew I was going to be in BCA Industrial Engineering but not the specific program.

Advice

Talk to everyone you can and ask them about their work. Keep a running document of the people you meet and their contact info. If your work is stationed in a cubicle, don't feel like you are obligated to be there all of the time. Get up and explore! The company genuinely likes to show their interns all that they can.

Electrical Engineering Intern

June - August 2019 • El Segundo, CA

What I liked

The Company's staff and engineers were very friendly and accommodating to us first time interns. They provided an environment that created good opportunities to learn and develop technical, leadership, and social skills that surely will help us in the years to come.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship was longer! There was so much to do and learn, but the 7 week timeline was just not enough to fit in everything I wanted to do.

Advice

Try and help out with a variety of projects on site to get a complete picture as to what the company does!

Intern

July - August 2019 • Huntington Beach, CA

What I liked

I enjoyed the flexibility of our roles as interns. I was able to learn a lot about different fields to which engineers can be applied to. There was also a lot of opportunities for us interns to network with each other during social events, and other activities.

What I wish was different

I don't really think I would have changed anything... It was a really good experience that provided us interns with the right kind of work that suited our level.

Advice

I'd say to just do whatever you can for everybody, because everyone could use some help here and there - you just need to reach out.
