Unilever - North America

Marketing Intern

May - July 2019 • Cairo, Cairo Governorate

What I liked

I loved meeting people from around the world all aimed at a similar goal. I got to see how a MNC operates first hand and how communication is achieved across multiple languages. It was very hands on and I felt very involved.

What I wish was different

I wish I knew how to speak Arabic, however I had a translator and learned a lot.

Advice

The advice I would share is that opportunities like this are worth leaving your comfort zone. I learned more from my time by myself in Egypt than I ever have before. I made a connection through a web of people in my life and made this crazy plan happen within a month. My advice simply put would be to go for it because odds are it's going to be worth it.

I had the opportunity and freedom to work with a number of people across several departments in the organization and was consistently encouraged to learn and grow during my 10-week internship.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have had more of a say in my location. It was chosen for me (and ended up being exactly what I needed), but I would have liked to choose.

Skin Cleansing Packaging Engineering Co-Op

January - June 2017 • Trumbull, CT

What I liked

Unilever is a company that is paving the way for sustainability with packaging. Because they're such a large company that owns so many brands, it is ideal for them to start taking sustainability initiatives under their wing and run with it. At Unilever I had the chance to understand what a global packaging role is like, and also understand the pressure of demanding timelines as well as how to collaborate with co-workers and suppliers. Unilever has so many opportunities for their employers to learn about various things, that it helped me become a well-rounded engineer.

What I wish was different

There could have been more chances to travel and understand how Unilever manufacturing sites worked, I felt like traveling on my other co-op helped me gain a lot more knowledge.

Advice

Everything is very fast paced, so it's smart to stay focused and organized. Sometimes it can get stressful juggling everything, but you have to learn how to say no every once and awhile, especially when you're feeling overwhelmed.

Business Development Intern

May - August 2018 • Phoenix, AZ

What I liked

I had a great summer with Unilever. While my experience was not typical as I was working remotely in the field, it was just as educational and impactful. I was very grateful that the Unilever Leadership Internship Program awards every intern a mentor in addition to their line manager. Additionally, instead of just getting some busy work, each intern is assigned a project that they get to take ownership of. This impact, paired with the great people I was able to work with, made for a great summer.

What I wish was different

While working remotely ended up working out for the best, it was a little stressful to find out so close to my start date. Additionally, there is a great orientation that educates all incoming interns on the company policies and SOPs, however, job-related training was more of a learn as you go type setup.

Advice

All in all, I had a great experience and would very much recommend this to anyone interested. To be successful, you have to be comfortable with asking for help and reaching out to people from different functions or teams in the organization that you may not know. Utilize your mentor and your manager as they will be huge resources. Finally, I found that I learned the most from simply having 1-on-1 conversations with people and challenging the status quo. Asking why things are done the way they are done uncovered lots of insights.

Marketing Inten

May - August 2018 • Englewood Cliffs, NJ

What I liked

I liked the fact the intern project was very hands on. It essentially was our own work to create and we had the freedom to tackle the problem or proposal however we felt was best.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship was longer, the project I assigned needed a bit more time to fully develop.

Advice

I would definitely make the most out of the people who work in the company outside of the ones you may directly work with.

Digital Research and Development Intern

May - August 2020 • Trumbull, CT

What I liked

I really enjoyed getting experience in research and development as I had never considered going in to that field with a technology degree. I liked how I got exposed to many different sciences and how technology plays a role in product development.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship had been in-person, so I could see the day-to-day life more clearly.

Advice

I would tell people to network with as many people as possible, even if they are not in your field, The more you know about the company, the better you can contribute to it!
