United States Postal Service

Marketing Intern

May - August 2022 • Washington, DC

What I liked

The team that I worked on was truly amazing. The Digital Business Services team was welcoming and gave me legitimate and meaningful projects that contributed to their goals. I also got to learn a lot about the Postal Service as a whole and acquire a number of skills like project management, marketing, and more. I also got to telework 2-3 times a week.

What I wish was different

I ran out of work on occasion because I finished my assignments earlier than the deadlines. But this did not happen often.

Advice

Don't underestimate the Postal Service. They're very innovative and push you to think outside of the box (pun not intended).

What I liked

I liked the freedom to be creative at times.

I would suggest leading by example. You never know who's watching and it is good to maintain your credibility.

Mail Handler

July - August 2021 • Warrendale, PA

What I liked

The pay and straight-forward nature of the job. My shift supervisor was exacting but very helpful, and most of my co-workers were very kind and helpful, even going out to their way to help a confused newcomer.

What I wish was different

Certain areas can be very confusing and sometimes no one tells you what to do but expects you to know what to do

Advice

If you don't know what to do, make sure you ask before you screw something up

Rural Carrier Associate

January - August 2021 • Weed, CA

What I liked

Independent work and interaction with the community

What I wish was different

I felt under appreciated and overworked. I am still waiting on 50 hours of back pay that I worked but was not compensated for. It has been almost a year since I worked the hours I was unpaid for and I still have not received compensation. The way I was treated feels illegal.

Advice

Don’t work as a rural carrier because your hours aren’t computerized and there is no guarantee you’ll be paid properly. City carriers have a computerized punch card system so it might be better.

Business Analyst Intern

May - August 2019 • Washington, DC

What I liked

They were very welcoming and business unit was willing to help with any problems and issues throughout the summer. Great management style. Open Door policy

What I wish was different

I wish HR was more informed on what was happening. There was a lot of miscommunication between managers, HR, interns. I wish they had more career development opportunities and lunch and learn type events. Organization is a bit slower paced.

Advice

Ask for help! Ask to work on projects you are interested in. They are very accommodating.

IT and Security Intern

May - August 2020 • San Mateo, CA

What I liked

I liked how the material I learned from class directly applied to how my team operated (Scrum Meetings, Version Control, QA Testing)

What I wish was different

Being that it was remote, it was hard for the internship coordinators to keep track of how much work was given. With that in mind, I wish they would have given us more tasks to do.

Advice

However much work or type of tasks, complete them as best as you can. Even the smallest tasks can shed a positive light on your work ethic.

Postal Carrier

August 2018 • Valley Center, KS

What I liked

I enjoyed being outside with nature and the customers who were excited to see me everyday.

What I wish was different

The circumstances the weather placed me under.

Advice

Enjoy the position but know the company doesn't truly care about you as a person. Your direct supervisor might, but the company does not see you as human. Keep that in mind when joining.

USPS Letter Carrier

June 1990 • Ridgewood, NJ

What I liked

Becoming part of a new family (my customers), taking care and watch over my elderly customers, going to cookouts with them, visiting them in the hospital, going to funerals, just an all around good time for over 26 years. Oh, holidays were the BEST. $$$$$$

What I wish was different

The career choice was fine, but the crap that went on in the postal service was mind boggling. You were always wrong no matter what. Por emplo, it's snowing, you slip and fall. it is your fault. The very first thing that is done is they look at your foot ware. Postal sneakers have a green tag on the right sneaker. The supervisors (who were the worst carriers) are the bosses, that is why most of their noses are brown.

Advice

Keep a good lawyer on speed dial, eventually you will need one. You can start off with a positive attitude and BAM. I personally gave the postal service 26 good years, plus 8 years of military service for a grand total of 34 years, knees bad, vision is so-so, carpal tunnel (both hands), busted ankles, but through all of that the work kept me healthy. The car is raggedy, but the battery is good. In all stay positive, work hard and be fair to yourself always.
