Vital Voices Global Partnership

Leadership & Social Impact Intern

September 2021 • Washington, DC

What I liked

My team was amazing! In our weekly meetings the team's directors and higher-ups always created a safe space to share thoughts and ideas. They were also very eager to continue learning more about how to be more inclusive and understanding of other people, and not just to enrich the team, but to also use that knowledge in the programs we worked on. Not only did they give the time and space to listen to my ideas, but it was amazing to see my suggestions be implemented as well.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have participated in person. The team is wonderful and I would have loved to have more personal interactions with them. The virtual world put a wall that made it difficult to surpass. I wish the internship was longer!

Advice

You will get in return what you give. If you wish to do the bare minimum and not connect or interact with the staff, then they cannot help you with suggestions and offers for job opportunities. These are truly wonderful people who memorized my name in my first week there, and were willing and very responsive to help and answer questions. Both on the work I was completing and on their own personal journeys.

Leadership and Global Activation Intern

May - August 2018 • Washington, DC

What I liked

The wonderful and kind staff who really care about the organization that the work for.

What I wish was different

The interns are all in one back room together, which can be both good and bad. It's nice to bond with other interns, but you really have to push yourself to develop relationships with higher up staff.

Advice

Seek out opportunities and ask for more work! There is always something to be done and the staff really value it when you put yourself out there.

Development and Communications Intern

May - August 2018 • Washington, DC

What I liked

Vital Voices was one of the best experiences. The team I worked with was so supportive and helpful. I really enjoyed the company culture. Everyone in the office is friendly and open. The CEO even makes you feel apart of the organization and welcome. It has a great message and mission. I got so much knowledge about the development field in non profits from my experience at Vital Voices.

What I wish was different

I would like to have been paid.

Advice

Keep an open mind and make sure you are passionate about your internship.
