What I liked

Amazing culture, training program, and staff.

What I wish was different

I wish we had gotten to be in person and I'd been able to see SF, but I was very grateful that we even got to complete the internship remotely since many people saw their internships get canceled. I also wish the experience had been longer than 4 weeks (it was originally scheduled to be 9 weeks).

Advice

Make the most of the resources they give you and the network of people there - I had alumni of my school reach out in addition to people from my hometown and got to meet a ton of great people.

Merchandising Intern

What I liked

The west elm office is beautiful and located in prime DUMBO, Brooklyn. The intern program was really well-run by our assigned HR reps.

What I wish was different

Corporate communication within WSI sucks. Technology is stuck in 2001 (I kid you not). Expect big decisions to happen in SF, and for the SF interns to get priority. Also, someone on my team was fired during my first week and I was handed an 800-page binder and told to learn how to input all Summer 2020 products into the online system in a week or purchase orders couldn't go out in time. That was >2000 SKUs. I pulled 10 hour days and didn't get so much as a thank you.

Advice

Overall, I wouldn't choose the WSI internship program again if I could go back. Return offers are below-market and negotiation is a no-go. The environment was ok, but not worth a precious junior summer.

Sourcing Intern

What I liked

I loved the structure of the internship program and the access that I had as an intern. I was exposed to so many people and departments and really got a good pulse of the company.

What I wish was different

I wish that I gained more technical skills during the internship like learning how to use their product management software.

Advice

My advice would be to meet as many people as possible to learn about their job as well as their career path. There is always something to learn from every person that you meet.

Supply Chain Operations Intern

What I liked

I loved the culture. When I first came to Capital, I was an education major and had no prior experience in a professional setting. I was very nervous when I accepted this internship because I was afraid I was in over my head. But anytime I needed help with anything, my managers/coworkers were always there to lend a hand. It’s definitely is a “put people first” culture, and I experienced that everyday.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more knowledge about different systems (Excel, Access) because I used those programs almost every day. I learned a lot, but I feel I could have learned more if I had prior knowledge with those programs.

Advice

Don’t ever be afraid to ask questions/for help. Being an intern, you’re not supposed to know everything and have all the answers. The only way you learn is by asking questions. Also, volunteer for everything. Even if it means you have to be at work by 5am and stay late, do it. People recognize your willingness to work for them, and they really appreciate it.

Advice

Get engaged with the other interns and make the most of your time at WSI, there are a ton of great events planned for the interns and general events going on throughout the summer! Take any opportunity that falls into your lap!
